160gr Matrix

I was able to make it out again today, i tested RL33, H1000, and confirmed the 52.5 grain retumbo load. The retumbo load measured 2620 fps at 75 yards from the muzzle. The H1000 load went 2554 fps at the same distance and at max pressure (52.5 grains). The RL33 load went 2550 fps at 75 yards from the muzzle at max (58 grains just like we thought). When i was confirming the retumbo load, i had two good shots and trigger breaks then on the third (last) shot i pulled down and right and that opened the group up to like an inch, but the first two measure .162 CTC, i think i am going to stick with the retumbo load and move on to longer ranges. I also brought some milk jugs........:D The impact velocity was about 2450 fps (i know, it doesnt represent long range but i wanted to know how they did at closer ranges) and it stopped in the 4th jug, most fragments were caught in the 3rd jug (the largest piece on the right was in the fourth) and the first and second jug were torn into three pieces each! The fragments that i found weighed 29.4 grains, about 18% weight retention, pretty good for that velocity, next weekend i will try to get to the range and shoot one into milk jugs with a case full of trail boss. I also shot some 162 amaxs into the 2 jugs i had left (i had a block of wood behind it), impact velocity was about 2750 fps and it retained 52.3 grains.

Riley.....thanks for the test info. Not sure I would load the case "FULL" of trailboss. You and the stock might travel farther than the bullet:D...Rich
 
I shot a 160 matrix into some milk jugs this weekend, except this time at about 1400 fps, the bullet didnt expand but penetrated 4 jugs before deflecting, i found it on top of the ground. The ojive of the bullet had a small crack in it (it wanted to expand but couldnt quite do it). A different media will likely give slightly different results but i think 1500 fps would probably be a pretty good minimum limit but some more testing needs to be done. Camera is far sighted so the crack is not visible.

What you found is VERY common. The bullets usually banana, tumble, and sometimes have the crack (on one side). I see this with Bergers and smk's as well, although the Bergers expand better because of the tangent ogive. I think it may take more like 200' to get them to expand. yep it was only on one side, i will see if i can stuff some more powder in there and shoot some more jugs.
 
We did some shooting this weekend at 600 yards and 1030 yards into 2.5 gal water jugs, results were interesting. We caught one 160gr J4 jacket bullet at 1030 and it was broken in half, first six inch jug was clean in and out but the second one the bullet did what ever it did and started two pieces which traveled through two more jugs. Impact speed was 1825 fps.
At 600 yards dad put two quick rounds into the jugs and the first one uncorked into chunks of metal, the second had less resistance and tore in two like the one at 1030. It was quite interesting, I have no doubt that these would work excellent through the shoulders of an elk but I don't know if a deer would get them opened at much range. Impact velocity was 2230 fps at 600 yards.
The J4 jacket with lead to the tip may be a little to rugged and with the lack of frontal area and long shank it's slow to open or tumbles. We have the Corbin jacket version to test next, these have a thinner jacket at the nose and have a hollow cavity in the nose so they should open much more aggressive.

I shot some of the 142 Matrix from the 6.5 SS, it impacted at 1880 fps at 1030 yards but it shot through all six jugs and we could not find the bullet, I found bits of lead and jacket through the jugs and the holes looked like it may have opened but just the nose maybe, hard to tell, enough energy was released to blow the second jug up though so something happened.
At 600 yards the 142's opened much like a Berger, blowing the nose of sending wreckage through two jugs but not penetrating the third, I hit them twice but very little bullet was caught in the jugs and most of it was scattered on the board. At 600 yards I feel confident this bullet would rock just about anything you would shoot it at.
So nothing earth shattering but a little bit of a glimpse of what may happen, some of the bullet shot into water seem to react very much the same in game but then others react much differently so I do like to see what happens in water but reserve final judgement when they are put to fur. It does seem to me that the 6.5 bullets in general tend to be a little harder or slower to open, even with the 140 Bergers they seem slower than other cals we shoot to open so finding that perfect bullet in the 6.5 may take a little more shooting or we may come back around full circle. :D
I just got of the phone with Elkaholic and he had a buddy shoot a bear with a 160 Matrix at 50 yards, sounds like the wound was tight and not showing signs of the bullet really blowing open but damage was done, I think we'll have pics of that coming.

The top left hit was a 160 Matrix and the one that hit the orange was a cold bore shot from the 6.5 SS at 1030 yards which put a little icing on it!

VERY INTERESTING RHIAN! I think the main reason the 6.5's are opening with a little more difficulty boils down to frontal area. If you have the same jacket thickness, as say a .308, the same nose profile, and the same impact velocity, but they open with more difficulty, it is the only thing that really makes sense. I may talk to Marshal about sending him some of my tips and seeing if he will make us some tipped versions: maybe in a 150 gr. class? I will post the bear pics when I get them. It did sound like minimal expansion for a high velocity shot, On the other hand, the bear only traveled 25 yards after being punched thru the lungs. The Corbin jackets that you mentioned may help as well. Also they have a thicker base section which will help them hold together AFTER the initial expansion. I had pretty good luck with the Corbin 30's and killed several elk with them. Again though, more frontal area. I guess we need more testing:D By the way; GREAT cold bore shot at 1030 with the SS......Rich
 
OK, here is the plan. I just got off the phone with Marshal and I am going to serrate some .308 jackets and send them up for him to draw down to 6.5. I think this may do the trick without a lot of time and expense. Will keep you posted......rich
 
My buddy recently borrowed my 6.5 Sherman and shot this little cinnamon bear with a 160 Matrix. The impact velocity was 2800' so I would have expected a more explosive result. The bullet obviously stayed together quite well. The good news was a dead bear which traveled only 25 yards. BEAR in mind (no pun intended):D, this was only one test. I am working with Matrix to produce a bullet that will expand a little easier.......RichS1630007-1.jpg

Gents- WE HAVE ROUND HOLES! :D

I was able to shoot the 160 Matrix in my 6.5WSM yesterday.

My 1-8.4" Obermeyer seemed to stabilize the Matrix, at least in this test by producing round holes (unlike the 140 CEB) on target @ 415yds. Temp was about 70* & DA was approx 5600'. I loaded up some random loads to test for pressure & velocity (crap I left my chrono data at home). I will upload actual velocity later today. :rolleyes:

1. 58.5grains (clean- cold bore)- Not on paper as I pulled a dumb-dumb & forgot to dial some ele. before taking the shot.

All loads showed zero pressure, no sticky bolt lift & no ejector marks. The 61.0grn load was knocking on the door of 3000fps. Interestingly enough, 3 of the rounds went into <1" at that distance... I MAY have stumbled upon an accuracy node lightbulb

I haven't played with a ballistic program yet but brother, a .700 G1 BC @ 3000fps or better..... look out fuzzy wuzzies, papa's got a brand new bag :cool:

Good deal! I just did a quick look at the ballistics, WOW. At 5000' ASL and 40* you only hit 1800 fps at roughly 1140 yards! Gotta love love the 6.5s gun)

I intend to load up some more at increased charges to test. 3k is a pretty decent number but I can get a little more :rolleyes:. I'm guessing 3100' we'll see, i'd probably quit there.

It will be cool to see what Rich comes up with on the new jackets.

We tested some of the Corbin jacketed 160's yesterday.
They are a little longer, 1.525", than the originals. The core comes about .3" short of filling the nose. I was expecting to see some difference in the way the two bullets reacted. As far as I can tell they behave the same way, the nose folds or bends and the jacket ruptured breaking the bullet into two parts and some shrapnel with the back half traveling about 24" through water filled plastic jugs.
That is the base of the bullet coming out the backside of the jug. It was stuck in there so hard I couldn't pull it out with pliers so I just cut that part out.

Pretty interesting Cliff! We'll see how the serrated ones perform when we get them. I'm hoping it will start the mushroom evenly and peel back rather than rupture.........Rich
