160gr Matrix

I will shoot an email and see if I can get some to test. My creed has a 28 tube and I can't help but wonder what some Reloaded -17 and that 160 will do

Well took them today for a bit. All my plans got messed up and i didn't have a spotter. Anyway, here goes:
Short story, either the fps or the bc or both are off. At 1000 they were 2 moa lower than 2850 and .700 bc. The shoot fine. I have a few pictures. Wind was blowing left to right 7 to 9 and angling toward me. 3 moa left seemed perfect at 1000. Once I got elevation figured out I put a group on a rivet in the rock that was around .5 moa. Being a Dufus I shot too high up rock to get a picture with a tape etc.

I am unsure but I think the 6.5 - 284 might be to slow for this bullet in a 24 inch barrel.

Brent.....A left to right wind of 9mph at 1000 yards would drift that bullet probably 40" give or take? Left to right also causes the bullet to drop approx. .3 of the drift factor. .3x40"=12" drop or approx. 1.2 moa at 1000 yards. Did you factor that in?.........Rich

I got some testing of the 160 grain Matrix done today from my 30" barreled 6.5x284, i found really good accuracy (i havent measured yet but definitely under .5 MOA) at 52.5 grains, 53 grains of retumbo showed a slight ejector mark and groups started to open up a bit. The mirage was horrible and i firmly believe the same 52.5 grain load would have been 1/4 MOA if it wasnt for the mirage and gusty winds (10-20 mph) My one issue is speed, my chrono showed about 2690 fps average with 53 grains 50 yards downrange. I think maybe a slower powder would work better in my long barrel? RL33? I have a pound for the 338 Lapua but if it works out i am sure i could get some more. Although i dont want to mess with the 52.5 grain load i have already, i want to do some LR testing, including testing for expansion at low velocity. I guess i should also note that my chrono usually measures about 50 fps slow of the actual velocity based on drops of other rifles. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Riley......Good job! I really doubt that R33 would work in that case any better than retumbo. It is super slow and I don't think you could load enough to get up to top end? You could try it though?......Rich

I was talking with Lefty7mmstw, he knows alot about testing new or different powders that dont have load data for them, he also has been doing some testing with rl33 and him and i agreed that i would probably hit pressure around 56-58 grains, i checked to see how much rl33 i could stuff in the case without having the bullet move out on me (i waited 24 hours) and i could fit about 62 grains in there. I think i may give it a try and if i dont get anymore velocity then i will stick with the retumbo load and move on to longer ranges.

Rich, are you sure about that .3 factor? Sounds like an awful lot to me. A curved path will be longer than a straight path, but a curved path of 40" over a 1000 yds would only be a couple of inches longer than a straight path. I haven't noticed any difference of drop with 5 MOA of drift @ 1000 yds.

I have always been a little suspect of the .7 BC considering their length. I'm guessing .65ish.

Riley,

Will be interested in how the RL33 does. Sounds like it could be promising for a 6.5 300 WSM.

I should be able to test rl33 tomorrow, i will have to get some serious reloading done tonight! I think i will email Marshal on monday and get some more ordered, i like what i am seeing so far.
