Are calibers above 308 and below 375 destined to wither away?

I shoot LR with these cartridges:
28N with 195 Bergers (I have two rifles)
300 RUM with either 225 ELDM or 220 ELDX (I have three rifles)
.338 LM with 285 ELDMs (I have two rifles)
.338 Edge with 300 Bergers (one rifle)

I have the luxury of shooting every day at my CO place. I don't see much difference in wind drift with any of these. I don't have a 6.5 of any flavor, but I do shoot one of my .308Win rifles quite a bit, mostly at 500 yards. I took it to my CO place one summer to shoot at 600 and beyond, but the wind makes it much more difficult than the above rifle/load combos. It is my primary 500 yard gong rifle in AZ and works great for that - I rarely shoot the above calibers at ranges less than 623 and only shoot 623 if the wind is howling.

The rifle I have shot the most game with, and the largest variety (everything from a grysbok in Zimbabwe to a lion in Tanzania) is the .338 Win Mag in a plain Jane 700 with a tupperware stock. Shot all of my elk with it and all but one moose. It doesn't shine at LR due to the excessive wind drift, but it gets the job done.

BC is important, but it certainly takes a back seat to practicing in the wind at long range every day.

@memtb I got a new scope on the 338 today.
She's lighter now!

That's mo bett'r…..but, still too heavy for this old man to "enjoy" pack'n all day! 😁 That's a lot lighter than it was, what a couple ounces! 😜. What's the weight with a sling and fully loaded!

I will say this tho……she's a right pretty thang! memtb

I believe that whether any particular cartridge survives or dies commercially has less to do with terminal ballistics and more to do with marketing.
Especially with the availability and cost of reloading components going through the roof the last couple of years, the draw to get into reloading has to be at a very low tide right now.
The Creedmores and PRCs have lived off of those shooters who just want to pick up a box of ammo at Walmart and go shoot.

Just wondering what's the lowest velocity impact on game you've had with this bullet? It's supposed to shatter on impact not expand. Did it work as advertised.

900 yards at a estimated velocity of 2140fps. Complete pass through. DRT.
No time to do a necropsy as time was ticking down to beat the incoming storm

Shooting long range for hobby or sport will often include the aspect of shooting comfort. That steers the shooter to lighter calibers, smaller cartridges and lighter bullet weights, all governed by bullet flight stability and wind resistance.

There is always a niche for hunters who like to thump game using a little more than the average person. The .338's likely have ownership of that area. The more sleek ballistically superior bulets are already common but the caliber is still firmly stuck on 1:10" which governs the design limits of those extant bullet designs.

As soon as just a single "name" manufacturer brings out an 8:5"-9.0" twist, that caliber will take a leap forward with any cartridge that can accommodate the faster twists with suitable velocities.

Recoil/comfort favors the .338/06 and .338 Winchester cases but I'd exoect a full length case like 8mm Rem, .340 Weatherby or even an Ackleyized hibrid version of the two to gain a fast following.

The existing 265gn and 285 gn Barnes LRX bullets are enticing enough for the hunter and the 300gn Sierra HPBT may tease a few at the gongs.............and then, maybe it's already there? The 1:10" already defines the market?
I still believe a 338 based on a .375 Ruger with a COAL of 3.800" running the 250-270 class would do well.

I should've stated this before in my posts. It's been brought up in the thread and I will add my comments in agreement
The masses do not want to reload now. So that means factory support and the BS that comes with that choice.
Once again to the OP it is about the mindset of the masses the commercial manufacturers are targeting.
The individuals that break from the industry will bring the innovation but the system is designed to keep them from being a competitor
When a company pushes a product and an individual calls BS on it who do you think will get the masses to look at the company and ask "***"?
It's a controlled industry that only a handful of companies get to compete and make "improvements towards development" for the industry as a whole.
If you don't think so just look at the whole industry right now!
It's in a mess. A mess that few see and understand. From 1 company buying the vast majority of all the companies that produce components ad related products and then selling them off to a foreign company that is questionable with its past history but it's allowed to happen.
I have to think it's not about "development" it's about all of us being sucked into the system and not being able to see the forest for the trees.
We have a chance. Right now. To change the industry.
Do I think it will happen? No, sadly, I do not. I've been wrong before and I could be wrong now.
