Today I acquired A-Bolt II LH 300 WSM which is my 4th LH rifle. JP Sauer & Sohn 200 30-06 and Savage 116 fluted ss, adj brake, 7mm Rem mag and Weatherby Mk V Deluxe 300 WBY Mag. Note to self. Must stop and sell some of the closet rifles and let them be used rather than be stuck in the safe in the dark and be ignored.gun)

I can get brass, and -gulp- factory ammo off the shelf reasonably, and at most general stores.

If I still had my sizable stock pile of fired brass, dies, powder, bullets and press, even better.

Nothing has ever gotten away from me shooting a 300WM. I don't think I would like anything much bigger, and the rest is not normally on the shelf, or more than my wallet wants to handle.

Not enough choices to make a good decision.....can't vote for a cartridge that I don't want.

These a all boring choices!

Boring???? Do tell.... I don't think there's anything boring about a good rfile in any cartrdge gun)

Having owned most of these chamberings at one point or another, and a few that are larger and even more cost prohibitive to consider firing all day...and then selling all but the 300WSM and 300WM custom builds. Although I can say the 6.5-284 was almost the cheapest cartridge to fire, and out of this list the 338Lapua the most expensive(those 300gr projectiles just don't grow in my garden and can put a serious dent in the shooting budget).
The 338Lapua is definitely too much for whitetail deer in the south. After putting a 250gr SP into the front shoulder at just shy of 450yards(clear-cut timber land lease), FUBAR'ing both lung and the top of the heart...the deer walked(yes, walked) dang near 100yards and layed down and looked back at the stand. I've had better results with a rifle that weighed half as much(and cost half as much)...chambered in an everyday .308Win!!! Maybe this was just one of those freakish days in the field.....

Good rifles are fun, custom rifles are even more fun! Wildcat rifles that are custom built is just where my heart lives at this point in my life!

But for something truly outrageous try: YouTube - Mag-Fed 20MM Rifle with Suppressor (**Not me, not my rifle**)

Next built will be a 283Butler. Based on the 284Win cartridge, shortened to 1.35", run into a shortened 7RM die to form the shoulder, and then trimmed to 1.25", reamed and neck turned, annealed and loaded. Chamber left with enough freebore to feed it 180VLDs only....might do some subsonic work with it, but will definitely do some supersonic load development.

I guess the point is, what is boring to me might not be to others and maybe I should have stated that in the above reply.....apologees to any having these chambering and believing that there is no substitute!

The list was probably appropriate for a few guys.
I hand load for the following big game cartridges for rifles; 19 Badger, .222, .223, 22-250, 6mmBR, .243, 25/35, 250/3000, 257 Robert Ackley Improved, 260Rem, 6.5x55, 270, 7x57mm, 7mm Rem mag, 30-30, 303Sav, 300Sav, 7.62x39mm, 308, 7.5Swiss, 30-06, 300WM, 303Brit, 7.62x54R, 8x57mm, 338WM, 35 Whelen, 44mag, 45acp, 45Colt, .410, 45/70, and 12 ga.

I have reamers for the following big game cartridges for rifles; 223, 6mmBR, 243, 257 RAI, 7mmRM, 308, 300WM, 7.62x54R, 338WM, and 12ga.

Looking for commonality with the list, I see 300 Win Mag, but I am giving up on that cartridge for long range [still good for short range] in favor of the 7mmRemMag.

I own (3) 300 Win Mag rifles, and (4) 7mmRemMag rifles.
I will be building more 7mmRemMag rifle(s) soon.

Is the poll list silly?
Yes.

Is the poll list stupid?
Sort of. The content may be stupid, but it got 21 pages of response.
Like Obama, who does stupid stuff, he did get elected.

My prior thread was for the purpose of creating the finalist candidates for this poll.

So the question is SPECIFICALLY, if you had to start all over with currently having no big game rifles, in which of these cartridges would you chamber your next big game rifle?

With those criteria the 7WSM is the best for me. The 270WSM would be right with it but not on the list. You can shoot anything with it. Prairie dogs to moose.

The 7WSM is discontinued in several rifles I would like to buy.

without a doubt in my mind it would have to be a 6.5x.284 Norma , everyone knows that 6.5 m/m is the perfect bullet dia.even if you won't admit it . The 6.5x.284 has every thing you want ,excellent 1000 yd.accuracy fron a 140 gr. bullet with a ballistic co. of 600 +/- that hits on target like a runaway locomotive. Whats not to like ?

Just braught my new 6.5 short mag home yesterday. As soon as I get the brass ready I'll load some up and see how she flys. I cant wait !!!!!!!

I'll go with the .338 Lapua/.338 Edge. this thing is such a good long long distance calibre the game dont even spook as you knock em over 1 x 1 although i still have very soft spot for my 7mmSTW on my Ruger No.1 action with which i have taken chamois and Thar from across some mighty big valleys.(but it's not on the list)gun)
