Gosh that turkey hunting looks fun! We don't have turkeys this far north, but I always thought that'd be a good hunt and a tasty dinner too!

Funny story, my kids are fascinated by birds in general (don't know why) and the other day my wife and kids popped by my work to see me…I work at a gun store/hardware store/liquor store/lumberyard/gas station haha, a small town one stop shop….theres animal and fish mounts in there and of course the kids love looking at all of the critters on the wall, walleye, pike, moose, elk….none of these got much of a reaction, but when my five year old son saw the turkey mount HE LOST HIS MIND with excitement, jumping up and down and whacking my wife's leg and pointing to it and yelling full volume

"LOOK MOM! WOW!!!!! A TURKEEEEEYYYYYYY!"

The bull moose right beside it was chopped liver in comparison to how dang cool he thought that blasted turkey was! 🤣

Congrats!!!

Tell us the story!
Not much of a story to tell.
I have been trying to call off and on most of the day so I gave up and came back to the house and while I was working in the shop I came out and looked around the corner and there stood 4 long beards, so I slipped back into the shop and got my decoy, call and the shotgun.
I eased the decoy around the corner and started calling, he came straight in and when he rounded the corner he got thumped 😂

This whole turkey thing also reminds me…read an interesting article some while ago about what a strange lot turkey (and to some degree waterfowl) hunters are.

The 3.5 inch heavy turkey loads are about the stoutest 12 guage loadings on earth, up to 2 oz payloads. And pump action shotguns aren't typically very heavy at all, and don't take the edge off recoil like a semi does. Many turkey hunters use 12 guage pumps with said loadings as evidenced by sales volumes if nothing else. The author did the math on a recoil calculator…and discovered that the typical light weight 12 guage shooting these super turkey loads generates more free recoil and at a greater recoil velocity than the typical safari weight rifle in 458 win mag shooting 500 grain bullets! 😮

The conclusion was that die-hard turkey hunters are an odd bunch indeed, taking more punishment to hunt a bird that isn't even that good at flying than they'd take to hunt the largest land animal on this planet! 🤣🤣🤣

CONGRATULATIONS VERY NICE. 👍
I WAS a Turkey hunter, got away from it.
Now they are eye candy entertainment.
Calvin your buddy is right, the 3.5 #6 was the hardest kicking and a 7.5 lb gun.
It was brutal, I usually had my back against a tree, so that hurt.
Now I watch them, we have had a big gobbler here for a few years. I named him
Gobbles, he has had 4 hens here with him for the last 6 weeks, strutting his stuff.
Beautiful Bird probably a 8" beard and 1" spurs, guessing he 27 to 30lbs. We have photos of him over the last couple weeks.
I will try and down load them.

I will trade you a turkey hunt for a moose hunt 😂

Nice work, congrats!

I was a 3 1/2 mag guys, actually cracked a tooth once patterning it in, mean bastards...

Now I use a 20ga flinter with 7/8oz #5. Seems plenty to kill and no broken teeth, plus the smoke cloud is awesome!
