took a friend out yesterday to shoot long range. the wind was perfect when we arrived but as soon as we got setup that all changed! he'd shot my pistols and a few rifles before but nothing over 100 yards. so getting dialed in and then setting him up for success behind my Browning X-Bolt Hells Canyon Long Range (26" barrel) in 6.5 Creedmoor was fun. the wind went from 1-2 mph to begin with to 10-15mph and kept changing direction.
was able to collect some great data on this trip as i'd never used the 127 LRX this far before… - this rifle/load was sending these with ave 2958fps… faster than normal for some reason. it was 37° and we were at 3865' elevation.
got my friend on the 10" steel plate. pic is him holding it.
also got a nice 4 shot group with one of them impacting the water filled milkjug hanging in front on a custom bracket.
2 impacts that first went through the milk jugs then 1) went through cardboard and 2) impacted the steel - left evidence that the LRX properly expanded even at about 1415fps. cardboard has a nice star cut through it and a star on the larger steel as well. one jug that was hanging against some steel even collected one of the flattened steel copper impacts. yup, it was still 124.8grs
wish i could have found the two that expanded into the star, but the snow and sagebrush make it hard to find such things.
despite the wind, we had a great time. my boys even enjoyed some 22 shooting. they would have shot long but opted out with the wind mostly in our face… (made it cold!!)
