With 1000 dollars what rifle would you buy and WHY?

find a good Savage 110FP, and rebarrel it with something like a 6.5-06 barrel from Pacnor. Second choice would be a .280AI barrel

He is going to shoot dear with me in NY at ranges up to 800M. Then when his skill progress we are going west.

Bed it yourself with devcon 10110 and it will be just as accurate as any hunting gun out there and weigh 8 lbs unscoped. Shoots lights out... Mine does.

To be honest, this would be an interesting thread to start back up. A lot has changed since since 2011!
I should probably not look though, since I have other priorities at the moment and I should really shoot what I've got more before getting new toys.

I would grab a Tikka for 800 as the all black version. Possibly upgrade parts when funds came available. Smooth actions and easy to upgrade down the road if you choose.

To be honest, I don't remember hearing much about Tikka back in 2011 (then again, there's a lot of stuff I don't remember these days). I DO remember the first time I went to a LGS and checked out the feel of a Tikka vs a Savage, though. Wow, the Savage felt awful gritty in comparison. Then again, my first bolt action was a Lee Enfield and almost everything felt bad in comparison. That Tikka sure was pretty good, though.
