Why I Crimp

As usual Muddy you have hit the nail on the head!
Being on limited income I put my purchases on a credit card and pay it off by 3 months end and then it's time to look for more things.
My wife just smiles cause it is keeping me busy.Rabbit hole indeed.
In fact I have a package coming today.
Same here, retired for 9 years now and somehow I noticed my income hasn't changed. DANG! Kind of forces you to triage your firearm related decusions.

+1, which then proves the loose nut is the problem! Its never my equipment. Somedays you just don't have whatever it takes. I won't make ANY changes until I shoot again. IF the results are the same then I probably need to adjust. The real issue for me is what caused the "change"? Sometimes that can be the proverbial rabbit hole.

I love to drink my morning coffee but I also know don't shoot afterwards! Coffee hits me hard but dang it tastes good in the morning!
That's will power! No morning coffee. I take the thermos to the range. In dry camp I put grounds in my mouth like snuff. If I skipped coffee, I'm not sure I could pull the trigger.

Add high blood pressure to that and you will need a gun that shoots in the zeros to shoot a 1/2-3/4" group @100.

I had friend who had high BP and was complaining of something flashing in his crosshairs. I looked through and for life of me could not see anything but clear as bell. He look through and swore WTH! Its back! Then I asked him, is it timed up with his heartbeat? Yep! He was taking 40 mg of Lisinopril and was probably going up another notch. He drank coffee too so he was definitely needed a hand to stabilize! It is amazing how this is so common and tough to deal with at times. My best shooting comes after coffee free for three (3) yes three days!

Why I quit shooting rifles in competition and went to shotguns. I like coffee and fight high BP. You cannot win, does not matter how good you or your loads are. BUT I can still kill enough to eat!!!

I have a new one that is just starting. All us old guys have floaters. Lately, instead of floaters I'm seeing sparks. Shoot across my eyes like a shooting star. Wonder what that is?

When using the lee fed what is your process of setting it up n how much of a crimp? I've starting using crimp n have found it helped accuracy, jus not sure how much or tight of a crimp I'm putting on. I'd say it's very light , I think I can just see edge of brass tapered
Here's a test for you then? Before seating the bullet use a marker and mark vertically from the shoulder to the top of the neck. Seat the bullet and check the mark for any change (run, taper or any other anomily). Then crimp and recheck. You should see without magnification your result and can somewhat measure the length/depth of the crimp. You can also measure the change between the neck and the mouth. I do this in those PITA 357sig cases.

I use the Lee FCD the same way I use sizing dies, powder charges and seating depth, It's a tuning tool for me that is just as important as anything on my bench, I do not use the Lee instructions as I set them up in a completely different manner and in my personal experience I have never seen it hurt a load, I've seen some the groups didn't improve ( although it did tighten up ES and SD's ) but I've seen a bunch that it helped, as I said this is the second time this has happened tom but this instance in particular the weapon had been loaded for two weeks and had been in and out of the truck to the field 40 or so times and dropped once, Like I said this is what works for me and once again I screwed up, Didn't hurt anything this go around as I was close by the house but I was disappointed in myself for not following my protocol from a lesson I learned 30 years ago
I don't go by the instructions either!

About to have another Coffee, it's morning and that's what I do .

I never considered how much it might affect my shooting. I have read something saying it's important to remain hydrated, With Water when shooting. Apparently it aids the eyes and muscles. They both need to be hydrated to work best.

It's just dawned on me I'm someone to rush things and not relax. Once I'm going I like to get on with it and keep going.

Floaters, Blood pressure, all interesting, probably not the main culprit for me but something to look forward to as I get older. Like drinking coffee in the morning, it's out of my control.

Definitely looking forward to crimping some rounds for comparison and getting out for a shot.

Orange Dust see an eye doctor as that is something my eye doctor told me to get to him ASAP if I see flashes of light as it could be something major.
That was just a couple of weeks ago.
Eye doctor can scan the eye and see things no one else can see.

ButterBean will chime in soon and describe the set up process.
I was crimping way too hard and deforming the bullet making it unstable in flight.
He is THE expert on set up.
If he don't chime in I can go from memory but he is THE king of FCD proper use.
