Who has killed lots of elk with a 6.5 mm bullet?

How is your Creedmore shooting? Just a few more details on my 6.5 Creedmoor rifle. The barrel I had put on my savage 10 Action was from PAC-NOR. It is a straight taper 26" with Polygonal 1-8" twist rate. The Loads I'm using like I said earlier are H4350 = 40.0 gr. 142 gr Nosler AccuBond LR, Hornady Brass, with Federal Premium Gold Medal Match Primers #210M. My developed loads were shooting .47 inch 5 shot groups at 100yds, and .75 inch 3 shot groups at 200yds. I keep my bullet seated just around .010 back away from the lands with OAL= 2.885". The muzzle velocity is right at 2670 at the muzzle.

It is a heavier heavier rig. The Creedmoor is a good cartridge.

Well, I too have limited experience with the 6.5, but I did manage to get my first elk and a deer with my new 6.5x284 using 140 VLD's this past year. The bull was a 110 yard frontal shot which lodged near the ball socket in the hind qtr (weighed in at 84gr) and a follow up shot to the neck 10 sec later putting the bull on the ground. The deer (whitetail) was a 397 yard neck shot DRT. As has already been said, right shot in the right place with a good bullet will do the job. I love my 6.5 and after shooting a 300 WM for 30 years it's a pleasure to shoot.

I've killed 3 cows with a 6.5-300wm with 140gr Amax's at 3230fps in the last 3 years. All of them were under 125yds. There isn't much difference in a 26 Nosler and my 6.5-300wm, maybe 50fps. I can shoot the 140's 3300fps in Winchester brass but the load I have for it in RWS brass is pretty scary accurate so I don't waste barrel life playing with other stuff.

It seems quite a few hunters are having great success with the Berger 140 VLD Hunting bullet. Have very many here used the 6.5mm 140 grain Nosler Partition for elk? Out of a 6.5-284 or similar? Assume results would be great?

I shot a cow elk at 905 yards and a large mule deer buck at 841 yards with a Berger 140 vld out of a 6.5x284 and was very happy with the results. Plenty of penetration and a lot of damage to the vitals on both.

Shot a 3.5 year old 5x5 this year with my snowy mountain built 260 rem. Shot was about 60 yards. First shot hit lungs, second was a high shoulder and third was to the neck which put him down. Unfortunately I did the gutless method on him so I never got a good look at his internals. The shoulder shot put a nice little 26 caliber hole right thru the shoulder blade next to that spine/ridge that runs vertical along the scapula. It did not exit the body cavity. Neither did the lung shot. The neck shot destroyed a vertebrae and left a baseball sized exit wound.

That being said it was a super mild load.

Overall a 140 going a few hundred fps faster would probably work better. I felt very under gunned.

Took this 5x5 with a 140 berger vld hunting at 2800fps around 100 yard shot. He was running quartered away and slightly uphill, I held to one side of his back strap and shot. One is all it took. Very happy with the performance of these bullets even at the modest velocity I'm shooting them. I didn't feel under gunned at all.

I picked up a 6.5 Creedmoor this year and loaded up some 135 grain classic hunters for my hunting set up. Pushing them at 2830 with some Reloder 16 behind it.

Two cows so far with it, one I shot and the other one a friend used my rifle. Both were 300ish (320,330) and both were in the crease behind the shoulder. Both cows expired in about 60-80 yards and the blood trails were fairly prolific. I am used to shooting elk with my .300, so this was a new experience for me. The bullet combo has proven to be lethal, but definitely not a gun that seems to tip them over immediately. Wanting to try some of the 140 hybrids, but not sure if I can expect the same results as I have had with the 215 hybrids out of my .300. Kind of like this little gun though. So much fun to shoot.

This bull was killed with a 6.5 saum at 809 yards this year. Piled up within 10 yards. Bullet was 140 JLK.
