Who has killed lots of elk with a 6.5 mm bullet?

3 Roosevelt cow elk have been killed within the last year. 1 with a 6.5-06 and 127barnes lrx at 450 yards, the other 2 with a 264wm and 120ttsx's. One of those at 80 yards the other bang flop at 600 yards.

My favorite bullet for short to mid range >600 yards or so is 120ttsx. My brother in law has had good success on a few deer and that elk with barnes 127lrx (ttsx) which I think is a great mid range bullet as well.

My guess is he is running the 127 around 3000-3100fps 6.5-06 and the 120ttsx at 3400fps from 264wm.

I wouldn't discredit a 127LRX from a 6.5-284.

Magnumitis,
What speed are you running the 140, load recipe, and rifle specs? Great bull buddy!

Levi

Thanks, it's a Cloud Peak Gunworks rifle running the 140s at 3010 fps and uses 57.5 gr Retumbo. Built on a 700 action and has a 26" Broughton barrel.

Might as well throw up another video of it taking down an elk. This time it's a cow that was shot in the shoulders.

The shot is at 45 seconds. There wasn't much camera light left so it's kinda hard to see.

The country in that last video looks familiar. You up near Shell in that one magnumitis?

My 6.5-284 killed 4 elk this year. Everything form a 7x7 bull to a yearling cow. All were one shot kills. I let my friends son use it on a big bull hunt and it did the job perfectly at 240 yards. Not a very far shot for this forum but it did the job. My cow I shot was 540 yards and hit the ground with one shot. My daughter shot the biggest cow I have ever seen. Placement was right on the right shoulder and it fell over within seconds. 4th was a big cow at 50 yards and FLOP!

I love this cartridge for all my big game hunting. It also took 2 deer this fall. Both one shot and dead right there. I am using the 140 grain Berger with retumbo powder at 3000 FPS muzzle velocity. Gunwerks built rifle and G7 nightforce scope. I love it!

I am only getting 2760fps out of a 24" 6.5x284. 52g of H4831sc.... how are you guys all getting 3k+? Retumbo? Longer barrel? I love the accuracy i get with this load .25-.5 moa but would like more speed/energy.

Both my 6.5x284's, one 24" the other 26" get 3000FPS with Retumbo. With H3831sc I get 2920FPS.

Len - My son, daughter and I have killed 13 elk from 50 yards to 612 yds with 6.5 wildcats build by Eben Brown of E. Arthur Brown (eabco.com). The cartridge is based on a 30/30 case with the shoulder moved up and necked down to 6.5. My particular load is 38 grains of VVN160 with a 140grn Sierra Gameking and it clocks 2450 fps.

I'm sure I'm going to get flamed by the .30 cal + guys but its all about shot placement with elk or any animal for that matter. The 612yd shot was a high shoulder/spine shot and dropped the cow where she stood but this is pushing the effective range of this rifle on elk. Nobody should have any concern over the effectiveness of a 6.5-284 on elk as it carries much better downrange energy than my 6.5BRM from eabco.com.

I have been on 2 Elk hunts with my son & a good friend of his ours. My son & I pack 6.5x284 and Franer shoots a 6.5x06 he had that gun built just to be different than ours. He shot a 6 point Bull at 750 yards with a 140 grain berger. He shot twice and both where just behind the elbow in the lungs. The Bull never moved after both shots, the elk next to our hit bull walked off and our bull went to foillow and tiped over dead both shots went through the elk. My son shot one at 400 yrds and the 140 gr amax broke the shoulder and entered vitals killing the bull. He shot a spike bull at 125 yards and he went down. We have killed many Deer and elk with the 6.5 X 284 with both the 140 gr. berger & 140 grain A-max.
