Best "trick" is own your own company. Oh wait scratch that, I do, and I never get to leave work behind.
My first thought. I started my own business after hunting in Africa twice. First time I met a guy who owned a timber business. Second time, in the Selous Reserve in Tanzania, I shared a camp with Henry Mills, who was on a 21 day full bag hunt (I was on a 7 day two buff econo hunt). Henry Mills and his brother started Mills Fleet Farm (ubiquitous in Wisconsin) and I peppered him with questions every night around the campfire.

I came home lusting to be able to blow 100K on a full bag safari. Even though I was making over 100K at the time, I knew I wouldn't ever do that hunt unless I started my own business. If I was successful, I could book that hunt and others. If I failed, the outcome would be exactly the same as if I never tried.

For me, it was a no-brainer.

I always put work first because that way I would have the funds to hunt. If you are the "Boss" delegate someone else to take over while you are gone.
If you have to "Trick" your company to get off for a day or two (weeks) for hunting find a new profession. That Company doesn't want you anyway if you have to deceive them.
This isn't Highschool in the REAL World!

The secret is to set yourself up in a career that allows you the freedom to hunt. This is something that I will try to instill in my children. Money isn't everything, happiness is!
