What's your elk rifle?

My elk rifles (always have a back up at camp) are a model 70 Winchester in the .338/.300 Ultra mag, along with a model 70 Winchester in the 300-Ultra mag.
The wife used to shoot a model 70 338 mag until Mr. C dealt her a heavy blow. I later made her a model 70 featherweight in a .338/08 that she really took a shine too. 10 years later she is back shooting the 7mm mag model 70 Winchester and uses our handloaded 175 grn Nosler bullets.

Mine is a Weatherby Ultra Light 300 Weatherby Mag with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 Rapid Z800 scope. Backup is a Sako Finnlight in 7mm Mag.

New - 338 RUM in a 700 XCRll action,#4 Bartlein 5R @ 26 1/4" with Holland recoil lug, bedded in a Hogue full block stock, 2# trigger, Leupold VX3 4.5x14.
Runs 225gr SSTs 3100 fps under 1/2 MOA as far as you want to.

Old - Backup Win 70 XTR Sporter 338 WMag , 225gr SP 2750 fps @ 3/4 MOA .
Has taken 23 mulies / elk from 60 - 490 yards.

I've got 3 to choose from:

Stainless 700 8mm Rem mag Rock Creek barrel, 200 gr Partitions at 3100 fps.

Weatherby Accumark 30-378 Wby, 200 gr Accubonds at 3200 fps

Stiller Predator 7mm STW Hart Barrel, A5 stock, 168 gr VLDs at 3200 fps.

Here is mine. It is a work in progress. Rem 700 7mm Rem mag. Currently in a HS Precision stock that is bedded, Timney trigger and Zeiss glass. Bartlein barrel should be here in a week and it will go to the smith to have the action trued and blueprinted and barrel installed.

I know this is a long distance forum, but I'm stunned by the few responses from members using traditional cartridges which have brought down more elk in the last century than any one of could ever conceive. 30-06 or .308. I personally own both as well as a 300 win mag, but my go to gun is the .308 with a 160+ grain bullet. I know the 308 doesn't necessarily buck wind like the 7mm, and it doesn't have the velocity of many standard and mag cartridges, but it's inexpensive to shoot a lot of bullets through it and has great barrel life which allows the owner to become very proficient with what his/her Rifle will do in a variety of conditions. It doesn't kick so hard that a brake is needed and one definitely isn't going to be flinching using a 308, so no pulled shiots... ever. There's a ton of great bullet choices, and the 308 flat out kills elk to about 600 yards with proper bullet placement.

I'm definitely not neigh-saying others choices here, cause I've seen a lot of great rifle choices lined out in the preceding 10 or so pages, it's just that it's almost as if other users are embarrassed to post if they don't have the newest greatest sniper cannon to launch pills with.

Well I'll say it...

Tikka T3 Tactical .308
Vortex Viper PST FFP 6.5-24x50
Harris swivel bipod
Berger 168gr VLD @ 2575.

I shoot whitetails with WSM's and STW's. Elk hunting at moderate ranges would have me shooting one of the 300 mags. Longer ranges would definitely call for a 338 mag even though it may not be needed.
There really is no such thing as "overkill" but being "under gunned" certainly has its limitations. :D

Lol... I certainly wasn't dogging some of the nice high power, high velocity caliber offerings, I was just surprised to see only (2) 30-06 A single 308, & several 270 variants listed in 10 pages of posts. Shocking. Certainly more power on a hardy animal like an elk is nice, especially as distance increases, but I've found the short action 308 as well as the 30-06 to be more than sufficient to humanely take even the biggest bull. With proper bullets, ability to read the wind correctly, and good fundamental marksmanship, many of the non- mags are more than capable of taking elk. There's only about another 150 or so rifles I would love to own, some of which were listed in prior postings, however, I always seem to come back to either the 308 or 30-06 for pretty much all big game. Guess my age is showing!!! :D

This year I'm shooting a 308 launching a 215 Berger 2460 fps with a 10x SWFA SS optic, I have 338's and 300 mags available but the performance of my little 308 which is proven to 1450 yards just really tickled my fancy this year, we'll see what an elk thinks of it at 800+ gun)
Next year I'm feeling may be a Lapua Improved kind of year :D
