What makes for a barrel burner?

Heat and pressure will end starting the erosion, firecracking and then peeling off of the firecracked areas.

I have never seen or heard of a big magnum going 5000 rounds. the 308 only goes 3500-4000 or so by all estimates.

I have seen a 300 WSM go a documented 4000 before changing barrels and that is by far the best of any documented magnum I have seen or heard of.

However, guys are having a lot of luck with the salt nitriding Joel Kendrick (6mmr.com/BR central) is doing now and treated barrels are going over 5000 with hot loads and still going. Costs about $150 or so per barrel. It is an industrial tool steel hardening process that so far has shown no issues with comp level accuracy for both SR and LR shooters. Same loads before and after for most barrels.
