What is wrong with my barrel?

You can always try cleaning in it up by fire lapping it. It will help smooth the high areas and help with the copper fouling if that's a problem. It's helped one of my barrels before that developed some pitting.

We tried the Tubbs on a friend's used rifle he bought dirt cheap. It shot just as poorly as before. This was the last resort before having a new barrel installed.

Put the money on the Tubbs toward a new barrel. IMO...

The other thing that may have happened is throat wear which could cause your load to be out of tune. With the original load that shot good, try loading 5 or 10 shots with the bullet .003-.005 longer and try them on the next trip to the range.

I've messed with seating depths a little, but with no luck. Do you think the classic hunters would potentially be that sensitive? Thanks for the insight.

I had a pitted barrel on a 7 RM and it would shoot poorly when clean due to copper being torn off jacket of bullets going thru pits. Once fully fouled and the pits filled with copper it would shoot about .7 moa. My advice take to gun Smith verify if pitted then make your decision rebarrel or live with it.

Good question. Before. That's what prompted my switch.

Yes. I tried different seating depths, powder charges, brass, and primers.

It's very possible.

Might try a different scope on your rifle before retiring the barrel.
Some scope failures are an insidiously slow process.
