6 GT for Hunting Rifle

If you want the authority, I would give GA Precision a call. They will likely have every answer you need

I emailed about CTR mags and some guy named Thad said they can't guarantee the 6 GT will work on polymer mags. He wasn't aware the CTR mag isn't polymer.

I've heard the 6 GT cycles great in the standard M Tikka 308 polymer mags. If I have issues, I'll just put my build in a KRG Echo chassis.

That sucks. I have their 6.5 GAP that i built about 10 years ago with them and they were great.

Figured since they developed the GT, they would be the source.

Don't know Thad but maybe give the benefit of the doubt. Might be hard to keep track of every piece of kit

George and Tom(GT) designed that case to be ran in AICS mags only.

Dropped off my Tikka CTR 6.5 CM at Bug Holes to get a rebarrel this morning. I decided to go 6 GT for barrel life, accuracy, velocity, light recoil and 1:7.5 twist to shoot heavies.

I've gone 3/3 on deer this season including one at 501 yards with a Howa Mini 6mm ARC and 108 ELDM handloads. I figured the 6 GT will get me an extra 200 FPS without sacrificing too much in throat wear.

Anyone hunt deer sized game with the 6 GT? Seems like it will be a good balance of spotting hits on long shots and effectiveness.
I've been considering this myself. I already have 2 6GT barrels and an 6 ARC. I see proof makes a carbon wrapped prefit in ARC but not GT which is kind of perplexing.

6gt is primarily a match cartridge, heavy steel contours. The arc is primarily an ar15 cartridge, so they offer both carbon/steel on that.

Yeah, I get that for the AR...I was referring specifically to bolt guns. Proof offers a carbon wrapped 6 ARC prefit and a stainless for the zermatt action, but only stainless competition contour for the 6GT.

Proof makes some strange choices. They should offer 5R and 6 groove barrels on all calibers and faster twist rates on their 30 caliber barrels. I love their barrels and have no complaints with any of the ones I'm running, just wish they had some better offerings for twist and rifling.

Proof sells a ton of 9tw 30cal blanks, which will stabilize the heaviest cup/core bullets. Heavy solids would need an 8tw. Unsure if they offer that. I personally have not found any accuracy or other advantages to 5r VS traditional 4gr or 6gr land configurations.

I second this...although I have many PROOF barrels, lately I am gravitating more to Bart. PROOF has kinda gone away from being a custom maker - in the sense that you can call them and order one specific barrel - after checking their site, they offer very specific things or they point you to a retailer.

I prefer Bart because I can get any twist I want. Yes sometimes I have to wait but it isn't often I am in an OMG I need a bbl tomorrow situation

Yeah, I have several Proofs including 3 30 cal in 9 twist. I would prefer an 8 twist. As far as 5r vs 6 and 4 groove. I have been reading a lot about people pushing thinner jackets down the 4 groove proofs having multiple "petal" strikes on target, as if the bullet is coming apart. I have several proof stainless competition barrels that are 4 groove and haven't seen it yet myself. It would just be nice to have options.

Bartlein makes fine barrels. I have a few myself including carbon wrapped. I'm not sure I will be getting any more of their carbon wraps in the near future.

After reading all the replies on your desired setup, I'd go another direction. What about a 243 win, 243AI, or 6 CM? You could still get a fast twist and have it throated long. These would have shorter barrel life, but you have a 6ARC to plink with.

Nah, I've got a solution if issue arises. I'm committed lol
