Got a friend not on the forum going on a Yukon Dall hunt in August. I helped him put a rifle together. Weight was the main factor. After lots and back, we decided on a 6.5 SAUM.

- Donor rifle was a Tikka T-3 .270WSM
- .264 Bartlein #8 barrel finished at 23"
- Manners Carbon Fiber stock
- Keep the Tikka bottom metal and trigger
- Talley Lightweight rings
- March-F 3-24X42

Bare rifle was 6 pounds 5.13oz. Rifle finished without ammo was 7 pounds 14.4oz.

We could have saved some weight on the scope, but hunter was stuck on FFP and MIL which drove us to the March-F.

Rifle will push 156 Bergers over H-1000. Anxious to see how it shoots.

Used a 6.5-47 to shoot my desert sheep. To be honest, I couldn't even tell I hit the sheep. After sitting there confused for what seemed like 5 minutes (it was 5 seconds), the guide said "nice shot" and the sheep tipped over. One of the strangest reactions from an animal thats been shot that I've ever seen personally.

For my Dall, Stone and Desert I used 300 Magnums... both Weatherby and RUM... not that the sheep need it, but there are Big Brown critters that will eat you in AK and the Yukon... For the Desert the 300 RUM was over kill, but it's what I had. Now, I would use a 6.5 PRC with 143/150 grain VLD style bullets or my 280 Rem. Hopefully I get a chance at a Rocky or Cali before I am to old to get up the mountain! DD62

Odd stuff happens all the time eh, what was the starting velocity, range and bullet used. (just curious)
