VISA Bill Arrived - Mule Deer CO Tag - Wife WHATTT??

The funny thing about this story is I usually go on guided hunts and never a word about the cost. This year is a DIY and somehow the cost of the mule deer tag surprised her versus a $5K hunt. We are going on 39 years married so this was out of left field. She just asked what else for the DIY hunt besides the new tent, the new wood stove, mule deer tag, elk tag and wondered out loud if a guided hunt would be easier? Sometimes you think you got it covered and nope! She really doesn't care about the cost but was just surprised that if you "drew" a tag in the "lottery" you had to pay more for it. Am retired so I was just trying to save a couple bucks for next year when I cross the threshold for a moose tag in Newfoundland....... Next year is our 40th so no doubt I will be thinking of a WOW for her and us to celebrate. Maybe she would like a moose hunt?

I hear all the hoops and cost you guys in the States have to go through just to go out and hunt deer and elk, and feel bad for you.
I just had a buddy ask me to come out to his place to get rid of deer as they are everywhere

So the VISA arrives today and my wife very rarely looks at it but she happened to glance at it and saw the CO charge of $396.75 for Mule deer license. WTH! I had told her how lucky I was to get drawn for the tag few weeks ago but failed to mentioned the $$$$. I guess I have failed over the years to impress my wife with the value of CO tags. She stated " I thought you were lucky to draw a tag!" Translation: I though it was free! I then went on to explain the cost of an elk tag was always encapsulated in the guided hunts so you wouldn't have seen the actually cost. I then went on to explain the elk bull tag is $661.75. Which by now my wife is sitting there scratching her head on how much these hunts cost even DIY. I finished the discussion off by saying the elk tag is correctly priced because an elk to twice the size of a mule deer and this is a very cheap hunt since I didn't buy a new rifle.

So how do you think I did?

Buy her a Rolex, that would get you off the hook for years to come.

Just don't be like my buddy who asked the wife to write a check for a barrel order while he was on business trip. Barrel came after a few months, wife asked this genius, "Is that what I for $$xxx?" He responded, "Excuse me, you never had a job for XX years" Those words landed his butt in silent treatment for days....

When I first met my wife, I built her a rifle and taught her how to shoot it. I applied for tags and she shot her own deer. She saw the passion, the excitement, the beautiful scenery. Once the Z's were born she quit hunting but never lost sight of all the different cool things she experienced. She has been completely on board with the tags every year because she has been there and understands it's not the $700 for just the tag. It's $700 for the experience, memories, table fare, and the life you get to experience wherever your going. There's so much more than just the tag. That is very difficult to explain if you've never experienced it.

Pretty much where I'm at. She tried it but after little ones she stopped. Very supportive of my hunting though which puts lots of organic meat on our table. Honestly she was a vegetarian for awhile before she met me because she just didn't want to eat meat from the store. Probably helps we live in CO so I get to shoot a couple of elk and a couple deer for less than a non resident deer tag.

OK it gets better. Wife tells me I need to go on guided hunts from now on since she is worried about my health and since we are retired, should be enjoying life and I "earned" it for working so hard all those years.

I really am the luckiest guy on earth and Yes I do know that for sure.

My wife and I made a deal a long time ago that when we payed off our mortgage we would buy her a convertible BMW. About a year after we made that deal, I had my first custom rifle built. About a year after that, my wife found a convertible BMW and when I brought up that the deal was to wait until the mortgage was paid off, she reached into her holster and drew the receipt for my custom rifle!! One would think that after 31 years of marriage, I would have known better than to question it.... I have the exact rifle I wanted and she has a nice convertible. Fair deal in my book. I have always done DIY hunts except for a guided hog hunt she bought me for our 25th and I can only hope that my wife see's it like your wife does for the future. You are a lucky guy Muddyboots, Congrats on the tag and the wife!!
