Not relevant for the OP but in case anyone is wondering, KRG also does their Bravo chassis for Howa/Vanguard short actions.

I have a 223 Howa 1500 that is super accurate in a B&C tactical medalist. Also a Vanguard 6.5CM that is a tack driver in another B&C stock.

Been wanting to build a 7 saum for a bit now and have a vanguard 300 wm in the safe that I haven't shot in years and probably never will. Is it worth stealing the action from it for a build or no? Isn't it essentially a Howa 1500 action? I'd like to but not sure it's worth the time

Weatherby Vanguard is made by HOWA as was one made for CBC and smith and wesson. They are essentially the same gun and all parts are interchangeable. However, the triggers and safety are different and the bolts are different styles. Scope bases and stocks are the same. The barrel thread is 26mm x 1.5mm pitch. The action itself is built very well and is very tough. I have had to use carbide bits to blue print an action I am sorting out atm for a 308 Norma Magnum build.
Only thing I found is basically they are a budget version of the Howa as the trigger and safety on the weatherby isn't as refined as the Howa.

My youngest son shoots a .300 Weatherby on a Vanguard action. It shot
between 1 inch to 1-1/2 inch groups out of the box. All he did was put a recoil reducer
on the muzzle. I'm talking 3 shot groups.

I think you've all convinced me to stick with it. It'll be my first custom build and kinda want to part it together myself, slowly picking at it. I suppose I'll have the barrel pulled, and send the action/bolt off to LRI to dress it up. Then work on saving up for the barrel which I've been leaning toward a carbon six prefit.

Mine is being redone currently and I think you have made a good choice. I understand wanting to do it yourself but my smith specifically told me to order a blank and have him chamber it and thread it. I opted for this route. If you go with a barrel nut system then I think no worries with your plan. Good luck and keep us updated.

yeah before I "pull the trigger" on the prefit I definitely want to talk to the smith I wind up going with, I've talked with a few briefly and most of them seem very Leary of working with a carbon barrel for some reason. I do like the idea of no barrel nut though

I have two vanguards. A 300 wby and a 257 wby. The 300 is shooter, but can't get any consistency in the 257. I think I'm going to rebarrel it. Just can't decide which caliber!

I wouldn't hesitate whatsoever to build on a Vanguard/Howa action. I have a custom 257 Weatherby built on a Vanguard action and it's the most repeatably accurate rifle I own. I have 600+ rounds down the tube and it still shoots .5-.75 moa groups. I also own 2 factory Vanguards. One chambered in a 240 Weatherby and the other a 270 WSM. Both were (still are) easy sub-moa shooters right out of the box.

My next build(6.5 RPM) is going to be on a Vanguard action. I'm sure it will perform much the same as my 257.

In my opinion, if you buy a factory Weatherby Vanguard Accumark with SS fluted barrel for about $800 that's the best deal under the sun. I have one in 257 Mag, best gun and deal ever.

That thought crossed my mind, I think you are correct. Those rifles are a great value. Sportsmans warehouse here had 1 in stock, but this vanguard is the first rifle I ever bought for myself and the first rifle for me to kill a big game animal with. And I wanted to do a custom build too.

Just put a Timney in my Vanguard last week, easy.

Timney in a vanguard is easy. I did mine without issue.

Mine is on order with them right now. I bought a 26" carbon wrapped barrel in 257 weatherby mag to rebuild mine. We will see how it goes...
