The Beast 30-06

A 26"-28" barreled 30-06 might just be the best compromise FOR ME for a 700-800 yard elk rifle.
They aren't pretty but I'd use a folding chassis before I sacrificed on barrel length. Get a longer sporter taper barrel and make it easier to pack with the stock folding out of the way.

I look at it this way, if I can't carry it ready to shoot then I'll figure out a different job for it. Since some of my curio and relics have close to 30" barrels I'm not too concerned with barrel length. And if I need a light weight rifle I'll always keep my FWT 30-06.

BTW there's a pretty good thread with on Nosler's forum with the 30-06 22" barrel using 212 ELDM and 6.5 StaBall. The shooter went over book loads but got 2700 fps with no pressure signs. Another option for loads or powder.

Speaking of 30-06, here is one in the making, stay tuned.

Finished the muzzle end last night. Blended the Ti Pro 3 ST. With the Krieger 10T sporter, can't blend the nut to the barrel OD. This is the best I can do.

Chamber will be a 30-06 Serengeti. Barrel will finish at 28. Free velocity....

FYI, this is the 6th Ti Pro 3 in the herd. A couple of 284s, rest are 30 cal.

I really began to like the 30-06 more when I bought a 26" barreled Remington 700 Long Range. That longer barrel certainly gave it an extra boost in velocity. After that is when I decided to permanently ditch the 270 Win and rebarreled it to the beast.I've had a couple of 22" barreled 30-06's that really struggled to get to mid 2800's with a 168gr bullet.I have three 26" barreled 308 Win's that will do a little over 2800fps with that bullet so I really didn't see much difference between the two. Some barrels are faster, but the 22" 30-06's have been the least pleasurable to shoot out of all the 30-06's I've owned.I have three other 24" barreled 30-06's that I like, but I still think a 26" barrel really a great choice for the 30-06 and I think it's only offered in that length barrel in a factory rifle in the Remington 700 Long Range. The only thing I had against the one I have is it had an extremely long throat and the bullet would fall out of the case before it would touch the lands.I had it rebored to a 338-06 and it shoots great.
You did what I would do if I ever wanted a caliber change, it would be to rebore it to 338-06, it can drive a 200 grain bullet just shy of 2800 fps.
I'm glad you switched to 26" barrels.

The 30-06 Serengeti should do really well. Can't wait to see your results. With that break you could probably shoot it like a pistol.I bought a 300 Win Mag with this type of break on it.It's like I really don't feel the recoil.Feels like everything goes straight out to the sides of the break and really very little pushes back towards the shooter.I have no idea who the manufacture is,but it's awesome.

2800fps is easy with my 338-06 with 200gr bullets. That's why I was surprised to get that with my28" barreled 30-06.
Here is my 26" barreled 338-06.

That is very impressive. You can hunt anything with this setup, and what makes it even better to me is that it is a non-belted cartridge. As most here are probably getting tired of me stating that I only hunt with 30-06 for more than 50 years I keep forgetting that the new bullet designs and powders make is easy nowadays to reach the higher velocities I ever reached 50 years ago. Smart move reboring to 338-06, thank you for posting these impressive numbers. Have you tried any 250 grainers yet?

Mine was test fired with a 250gr bullet by JES Reboring.Jesse left a note that it shoots good.I just shoot 200gr Ballistic Tips and Accubonds.I killed a couple of red deer with it and it worked great.Really easy to make brass for it.I used once-fired 30-06 brass and neck it up.He did mine three years ago for $250.00,return shipping included and it was back to me in 14 days, there and back.He wasn't lying when he said it shoots good.

It boils down to what you are willing and able to work and spend on. If you look at the link I provided, I have factory and fireformed brass.
After playing with the 30-06 I had with a 26" barrel,I was getting velocities close to the 30-06AI book loads. When I got ready to barrel my 28" 30-06,I was looking at the 30 Gibbs and thought what a shame, such a great cartridge doesn't receive more interest.Factory brass I found,if it was in stock, was about two bucks apiece.I read a lot about people that did have a 30 Gibbs and complained more about it than praised it for the work they went through making brass for it,that was enough for me to decide against it.I have a good supply of once-fired brass I got for eighteen cent a piece.I figured I could just add a couple of inches to my barrel and still use the same brass and loads in my other 30-06's

I already have a .30-06, so I got an excellent price for the Kimber 84L Hunter in .30-06, I considered rechambering to .30-06 AI but went with the .30 Gibbs instead. I am OK with the lack of brass support or interest as it is still a wildcat. Fireforming the brass is part of the fun and learning. I wanted something that not everybody in their brothers has.
