Talk me out of the 7mm wsm

The 7 WSM is ran over by the SAUM in every category, it's simply a dud, will it have cult following, sure but if it was so awesome why does a 270 case destroy it in popularity, literally hundreds of guys have tried it to get it to run at the levels the SAUM will and it won't, the 7-270 WSM is the best many got out of it but that's not a true 7 WSM, every guy I know who truly campaigned the 7 WSM ended up building the 270 or 300-7 WSM and they did well but of those guys of the top of my head it think all are SAUM now.
If your going to have to put it on a long or med action anyway run a 7 Blaser at idle and enjoy excellent brass in the same action you'd have to use a WSM.
WSMs are some of my favorites but the 7 was a major pooch screw.
An excellent 7mm in any form that shoots well with decent brass is literally gunsmith GOLD, SS and SAUM you couldn't build enough of them.

The 7WSM can't be dead?? I just put a new Bartlein 7WSM barrel on a custom short/magnum action! Love that rifle.
But ...... I also put a new 30Nosler bbl on another action. What's deader than 30 Nosler ??????????????

7wsm is awesome. No need to be talked out of it. I had one in an xbolt - I didn't have a problem fitting the heavier bullets into the mag.

Back away from the cliff. Haven't you heard? The 6.5 CM is the End All, Do All Cartridge. Sell all your other Rifles.
On a serious note, go with the 7 WSM. You'll be happy with the performance and the accuracy

I think if you're a reloading tinkier cartridges like the Sherman are wonderful. I think the average reloader will quickly tire are dealing with all the steps needed . My father and I are prolific loaders but back in the 90s the only readily available hot 7s were the 7 Rem Mag and the 7 Weatherby, then the 7 STW showed up. So, we built a couple of STWs. Well there was no brass so we had to make brass from 300 Weatherby cases by fireforming . There was no 8mm Rem brass available to neck down. Needless to say it was great fun for the first year but quickly became a pain in ---. It was a huge relief when Rem started making factory brass. I actually got a lot more service from the title then. It soured me on reloading for awhile.

On the 7 WSM I'm not sure where you can get ammo or brass. A friend built one and he had a heck of a time finding brass and at the time the factory ammo had dried up. If you want a WSM I'd build a 300. Our of the 3 WSMs it's the most efficient and can handle the largest range of bullets . I've owned one, my son and father both still own one. I reloaded for mine for 10 years and still reload for my son's. We've shot hundreds of rounds in them and killed Coues deer, mule deer, elk, antelope and African Plains game . I think if you study the ballistics you'll find the 300 using 150gr to 200gr bullets is very efficient and there are tons of bullets. All three of our 300s love the Berger 190 VLD for longer range reach . For tougher targets like Plains Game the 180 Barnes TTSX or Hornady GMX also shot very good. There is a reason the 300 was really the only commercial survivor of the 3. I had a 270 WSM but the lack of high BC bullets makes it fairly limited in the long range department .

Anyway, good luck with your choice I hope it's a pack driver. I'm working on loads for my new 6.5 PRC.

I think there are 9 or 10 factory offerings available on Midway right now and I think hornady makes their precision hunter ammo in 7wsm.

Take this for what it's worth. I was at my gunsmiths shop a few weeks ago and he showed me a 7 SAUM he had built. My Smith is a legend in the firearms industry (he's the S in the Redding S dies to give you a hint). Anyway m, he said he really didn't want to like that cartridge at all, but said it shoots so sweet that he can't hate it. Now he's going to build himself one. I listen to what he says. Always learn something new from him. He competes in the King of Two Miles.

Howdy folks,
Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've got a Savage 16 short action needing a new barrel. I've got 30 cals and 6.5s but I've been thinking about the 7mm due the bullet selection. I want a long-range capable elk rifle so I definitely want more velocity than a 7-08. I'd rather have a 280AI or 28 Nosler, but I'm stuck with the SA.

I've thought about the 6.5-284 and the 7mm RSAUM. But I can readily find factory loads in 7WSM and I'll reload whatever after I get some brass.

I'm looking at Shilens but orders take 8-12 weeks...anything else I should consider?

you might consider the 7mm rm or 7mmstw i have used both for years and have taken deer,elk and moose with both ! i like the stw which is a 8mm necked down and will move a 170gr bullet right at 3000fps

Back to the original thought, Savage 16 standard or large shank? Savage moved WSM cases to a large shank barrel with more metal for a reason. Maybe just lawyers. Also changing bolt head to a .535 is more than 1 part swap. Quoting the Mrs... "Just sayin'".
