New to the 270 Win. and considering 140 gr. bullets. Manuals are one thing, but I'd like to know some real world facts. How close to max is the average reload, and what is the average velocity to be expected?
As phrased, those questions cannot be accurately, or responsibly answered. The reason many of the manuals seem to have max loads that are so far from max. I know I will miss many so I should not try.
Variations in:
1. case capacity within and throughout brands.
2. Powder Lots
3. Chambers
4. Leads
5. Bullet type, shape, and construction
6. atmospheric Conditions
7. Elevation
8. Lawyers
9. Etc. and so on and so forth.
I use 130 grain bullets. Seems to shine with them. RL 26 is giving me excellent velocity and accuracy . RL 22 and H4831 are great to.
Velocity runs 3100 to 3300 FPS.
My brother's rifle wears a 25.5" PacNor. The 130 NBT over 57.5 gr H4831SC is one of his tack driver loads. (Same load mentioned previously by another member). 4831 is a great choice for 130-150 or heavier bullets in the 270 for most. If you can't get H4831 to work, try H4350 or IMR4350 or...
Not my choice but assisting a young hunter reload for reg 10 twist 700. Average shot distance this area is 350 yds. Plan on using Hammers. Please offer your thoughts on best starting powder. I have on hand almost all currently popular powders. Thanks!

Getting Alliant powders here is hit & miss so I solely use ADI powders(your Hodgdons)
I am using what you would call H4831sc with 130gr SST's & im getting 2900fps.
I could probably get more out of it but I am after accuracy not speed!
If you want the most velocity out of the .270, I find that Rl26 will get you there. It can also be just as accurate as H4831sc. I have run both powders in several 270s, just depends on what the rifles like.
for a 140 I personally like the accubond, Sierra gamechanger and 145 eldx, for powders rl 26 gives highest velocity 3050-3150 depending upon barrel and powder. I'm going to try rl 16 soon since 26 is nearly impossible to locate. I think the 140 is a very good compromise for everything from antelope to elk, best wishes to you. I love my 270s
RL 26 and a 130 Swift Scirocco = 3300 fps out of my Rifles Inc 26 inch lilja barrel, max load tho. My groups are 3/8 to 1/2 inch , 3 shot group at a 100. Fed 215 M primer.
Just an update on some load development with rl 16 and 140 gamechangers. I finally got out and shot last evening for groups no chronograph and I loaded up 5 charges. All 5 with sub moa at 200 yds. This is a 2" dot. The highlight was at 52.5 gr in my rifle. I believe I'm 20 thou off as well. Best wishes and give 16 a shot, I think it shows good potential.
