Recoil

Beartooth Products makes a neoprene cover that easily slips on butt stock and improves shooter comfort by reducing felt recoil. They're about $20 bucks but, Midway USA sells em for a bit less in Brown, Black or various camo patterns. They also can hold 6 cartridges which is an easy way to increase weight, which slows a rig down an lessens felt recoil.

I will try that buddy, thanks.May be my cheapest option.
Getting old stinks!
Another vote for PAST RECOIL SHIELD!! I have the PAST Magnum version and it works great in reducing felt recoil. Helps dissipate the recoil over larger area. Inexpensive for what it does for you.

Back in early summer I started a thread about possible over pressure in my 300 win mag on a hot day due to the powder I use,IMR4350.
We know it is temp sensitive but never had a problem before. On monday October 16 I took the 300 win mag back to the range.Still a problem!I also took a 300 weatherby mag and again, hard recoil.
Starting last year in the fall saw doctor that speciality is losing weight ,He educated me on diet and and started taking Ozempic and a drug my doctor said would work and now I have lost a bit over 60 pounds. At present 63.7 pounds.
Feel great but the weight must have kept the recoil down as I never had a problem before. Also shoot a 45/70 with stout loads,no problem before.
I need a GOOD muzzle brake for this old man.
Suggestions?

Axisworks 5 port works great for me. My 11yr old is pretty recoil shy and he shoots my 300 win mag without issue.

First, hellava job getting on top of your health! At our age, EXTREMELY difficult to do. Takes a lot of fortitude to lose this kind of weight!

Salute!

Yep, those PAST shields good help to tame down a hard traveling rig, shooting off the bench on warm day. Those PAST shoulder pads even better, if ya got a lot loads to get down range in a short time, hot Summer day, in a T-shirt. Have noticed C.C. Filson Tin or double tin coat has a similar effect, when out hunting. Never can remember any recoil after a shot at an Elk or deer, while wearing a Filson tin coat, just spreads it around.

Got a Past Plus shield coming as well as a Limbsaver Airtech recoil pad on it's way.I have another 300 win mag and I can shoot it several times with zero issues so I know it's the rifle.
Getting scared of brakes as a friend said they relieve the recoil issue but magnify the report.I hunt without hearing protection most of the time.
I have some that cancel high noises but the batteries run out too quick. When I use them I have to carry extra batteries and had a problem with those batteries as I had them loose in my pocket one day and something shorted out and I got those pants off in a heartbeat!Keys and a pocket knife had burn marks but I was ok as I had long jon's on.Haven't used them since.
Thanks guys as you have helped big time.

I've got a Vias on my 7rum and she's been good...
I shot my 7 RUM with a Vais yesterday. Very lightweight rifle, was kind of concerned about what the recoil would be.
I'd say it was about like a .243 and the muzzleblast that folks talk about wasn't as bad as I expected, either.
But then, being mostly deaf helps in that regard...
I had more blast from the shooter next to me with a side port brake than I had from my own.
Thinking of trying a Gentry on the .338.

Again, this boils down to personal choice/preference. The Vais and Gentry Quiet (there is nothing quiet about it) brakes are the worst that "I" have ever had. I could not get rid of them fast enough. This has been 10+ years ago. I still have one rifle (.300 WSM) I bought used primarily for the action that came with a Vais. I have some extra .30 cal muzzle brakes, but it has the wrong thread. I am keeping it as-is for range rifle until it is time for a re-barrel.

Brakes are super loud, but they do work. I used to have one on my 28 Nosler and I wouldn't want to shoot it without something. Put a suppressor on it and now the recoil is tamed and it's not nearly as loud as it was. A bit awkward because it is a 26-inch barrel, but for stand hunting it's no problem. Did not hurt accuracy at all, and maybe made it a bit better because it doesn't deafen everyone within 50 yards now including myself, and that with ear protection.
