Congrats on a fine deer and an excellent shot! Among the many things to be thankful for today: fat bucks, good kids, fine shootin' rifles, and the freedom to enjoy them all!We have not bad the best year when it comes to buck quality. Not sure why but it seems when we have a wet summer, our buck quality goes south. Does not make sense but that had held true around our parts for the last 35 years i have been chasing whitetails. We have a load of bucks, more then ever, just no high quality bucks. So this year we decided we needed to do some management type hunting and try to take some mature 4x4 or lesser bucks.
my daughter Kenzie had picked out a buck we had seen in late august and september. He was a nice wide, 4 year old 4x4. That was the one she wanted and when opening day came, she watched and passed on a dozen deer. I would see her buck from time to time on our property or the neighbors but always when she was at school and he would be gone by the time she got home. Would always send her pics which i am sure she enjoyed!!
last week, he showed up, middle of the day and i got some good pics of him, again, she is at school.

just a nice solid mature deer.
this past weekend it really warmed up and the deer activity pretty much stopped. However, sunday evening, we had a good group of does come through to feed and a very respectable younger 6x5 and nice 4 year old 4x4 come through as well. Still she passed on them saying she wanted her buck.
told her this was the time of year if you pass on a buck, it could be the last one you see. Still she passed. Then with about 10 minutes of legal shooting time left, we caught movement of a few deer running out into our pasture. A couple does and what appeared to be her buck following closely behind. Was trying to make sure it was him and while he looked good i was not positive. Told her i was 75% sure that was her buck. She lined up her 243 and at just shy of 300 yards made an absolutely perfect heart shot. He ran 70 yards and piled up!!
now i was nervous hoping i had told her right!! When we got up to the buck, i was relieved to see that it was in fact him. Very proud of her patients and ability to pass lesser deer. Even though we had a poor quality year, she passed on a dozen GOOD bucks to hold out for the one she wanted. Very proud of my hunting buddy and her very beautiful Montana whitetail. Her little K-rifle strikes again!!

Great story and a nice buck! I believe girls really do it better when it comes to "sticking to their guns". They are much more patient than us men! I have observed the same with both my daughters. Great job to you both!We have not bad the best year when it comes to buck quality. Not sure why but it seems when we have a wet summer, our buck quality goes south. Bravo! As she grows she will branch out, pick up other hobbies, other sports, but I bet money she will ALWAYS be dad's hunting partner! Look at those smiles....that doesn't change! Thanks for all the replies, Kenz has kind of been in the middle of hunting her entire life as well as shooting. Just how it is when your Dad is a whitetail nut and a precision rifle manufacturer for your entire life. She has really not known anything else. Never forced it on her and as she gets older, other things are taking her attention from hunting but she still loves it and knows how much joy it brings her old Dad to go hunting with him….. hope the seed has been planted well enough to keep growing for the next generation. My passion for hunting or excitement anyway really exploded with my wife and daughter starting to hunt. I rarely get excited about many deer anymore but with Her on the rifle, its like the first time All over. She has had a pretty decent career already deer hunting. Her little APS K-rifle in 243 has served her well. Starting at 10 years old in the Montana hunter apprentice program

if i remember correctly, my first six deer did not have horns!!. She has grown up to be quite the young lady but certainly still a teenager!! Greatful she still takes some time with old Dad to hunt a bit. Very lucky i know. As mentioned, take your kids or grandkids hunting, it will make yours and their lives much better!
Much less willing to take chances and risky shots as well i hwve come to realize which is all good!!Great story and a nice buck! I believe girls really do it better when it comes to "sticking to their guns". They are much more patient than us men! I have observed the same with both my daughters. Great job to you both!
Ya her bed room is getting rather full!Great story! Great to see kids out enjoying the hunt.
Looks like you need to build her a trophy room
