Open Bolt Face To Accept .577 Cartridge?

If you want a power house in a short action, you might look at the short magnums. I built a 338 RCM on a model 7 Its even shorter that a 700.

Mine can push a 200 grain 338 bullet to 2970 ft/sec. the 225 can reach
2700 ft/sec, The 250 can go to 2500 but is a little brutal in a 5.5 pound rifle.

The 325 WSM has a little more case capacity and if sized up to 338 it should reach or exceed 3000 ft/sec with the 200 grain bullet.

The 350 Remington magnum was designed for the short Remington actions and can be loaded to near these velocities. All of these cartridges use a magnum bolt face and will fit in a short action Remington 700,673 of a model 7 action.

Just another thought

Good info here Mr Good! Save yourself much heartache associated with tinkering with highly explosive devices and build yourself a 338 Sherman short mag. You won't be sorry about the cartridges performance and you're not reinventing the wheel as they say. Go to Shermanwildcatcartridges.com to find out more. Rich is on here daily and is more than happy to answer any questions you'll have.

Yep, been following his designs from pretty much the beginning. Great rounds.

I've been thinking about a 338 Norma. I have a couple of LR Mauser 98 actions with Mk X commercial bolts .53 The Norma is .57 base. Do you think the bolt face can be opened up. Length wise it will be okay. The other option I'm thinking about is to buy a Remington 700 UM action and build a 338/300 Edge. Does anyone know if a reamer for the 338 +P Edge is a available? I think Defensive Edge only sells complete rifles for that cartridge and financially I have to build it as money comes available. Plus I want to put a paragonal barrel on it.

I built an Edge on a Rem 700 for myself, I build Lapua's for customers that I cannot talk out of doing them. A .595" recess on a 700 is asking for trouble if the owner doesn't understand they CANNOT run super high pressure.
My first 3 rifles came back with boogered extractors, had to fit M16 style extractors which further weakened the '3 rings of steel' formula.
I haven't had any crack, but have had one with a ruined bolt nose stuck in the barrel recess from an overload. Serious expansion occurred.

For myself, I build all rifles .588" or larger on CZ550 Safari Classic actions, and this is what I recommend to customers for Lapua/Rigby/Gibbs sized cartridges.
I know there are actions available with .750" and larger bolt diameters, but these actions are generally large and heavy.

Cheers.

Thank you. The CZ550 action for 416 Rigby is a great action. The only reason that I was leaning to the 700 is the plethora of accessories that are easily available. However, if I was to use the 700 action I would not build a Lapua. I would build a 338 Edge. Do you know if +P dreamers are available ?

Just use a regular 338 Edge reamer and then once you burn out half the throat...viola you'll have a +P...

Yes, the +P reamer is available.
I just throat mine long for the chosen bullet, this is essentially the same thing.
I will tell you that this is a single shot thing unless you buy a 4.00" long Wyatt's box.
I run mine as a single with one shell sitting under the bolt, it has bound up on me doing this, but I feel it's better than trying to drop a shell on the follower.

Cheers.

Remington now sells 338 lapua, makes you wonder if all that old worry "is it strong enough?" was just fear not reality.

JE, I have read this about long actions, like opening a Rem 700 30-06 up to 338 Lapua size, but my thinking was that the short action is inherently stiffer and may be acceptable for just a .577 short action cartridge vs the Lapua's .588 or whatever it is long action and 90g+ powder. I may do one of these short actions just to build as a sort of prototype. Then do a more expensive titanium rig if it works out and I'm happy with it on the cheaper platform.
