New reloader powders RL-23 and RL-26

Anyone else notice that RL26 seems to perform best with loads less than 70gr or so? Looking through QL anything from the 240 Wby and 6.5x284 up through the short mags, and its the top velocity. Bigger rounds like the 7STW and 300 RUM (even 257 Wby) it doesn't fill the case enough...

Have some 85gr Sierras in 240 Wby ready to go waiting on the rifle...

I am getting 3000 with 190 Bergers and RE 22. Think I would need 71 gr of 26 to get 3000 with the 190 I think. Not sure if the case will hold that much. How full are yours with the 215?

I still have room. Maybe even enough for 71 gr. I don't how this powder works when compressed. Also, please remember my rifle is built on a long action. 215 seated out to 2.51 at ogive so I have a lot more capacity than than you would with a short action.

Yeah and I have a shallow throat. I am compressing the 69 gr Re22 with the 190s. My next 300WSM will have a deeper throat and 1-11 twist. What action did you use? Did the long action help with the feeding issues the 300WSM is known for? My 700 7 MAG. Is nearing barrel replacement.

I used a Rem 700 and kwik klip bottom metal and magazine. Feeds ok but I have trouble getting 3 rounds in the magazine. Gunsmlth is going to try to adjust.

I've messed with 26 considerably. My opinion here, if using Quickload, 26 is faster burning than 25. 26 looks like it was tailor made for the 243 win case, shines in 06 based cases too.

I have data from Alliant in pdf form, they will give it to you. Pm your email address and I will forward it to you.

One big questions for users of this powder, are your loads, ( velocities, drops ) staying the same with powder that has been exposed to air? A can repeatedly opened for charging cases.

I bought 30lbs of the same lot# and I've never had as erratic results.

RL-26 is Slower burning than RL-25, per QL,

Go to post #47, of this post,

I have posted the burn rates for most of these powders in these ranges etc.

A lot depends on case size etc.

I am still waiting on my reamer to get here,
then I can post some valid results for the 284 Win and 280 AI cases.

Tia,
Don

Thanks, I'm running off personal experience, and if you mess with the 2 in QL, I think you'll see I'm right.

Unless I am missing it, is there a suggestions for R-26 in 6.5-284?

I have a 9 twist and will hunt deer with this rifle. I will shoot 130 Accubonds. My current load is 56.4 gr of VV N-560 with these bullets at 3256 fps instrumental. M 70 with a 26 inch gain twist Bartlein nitrocarburized barrel. Nosler brass. HBN coated bullets.

The first rounds I loaded to get the scope on paper were with 100 gr bullets and R-17 when it first came out. I was impressed with the Swiss powder. R-17 is what I choose for my .224 wildcat based on the 6.5 - 47 Lapua necked down and blown out with 80 gr Sierras. Lots of velocity for the pressure and low SD. Alliant got the Swiss crew to come make the 4000-MR and 2000-MR for them at the St Marks plant. I have tried both, but the velocities are poor compared to even the Bufors powders of their own Reloader series. Alliant's data even shows that the 4000-MR is slower than R-19 and R-22 in cartridges that they have data for both like .270 Win.

I got out with Reloader 26 loaded in the 6.5 - 284. I tested 130 Sciroccos (HBN coated) in a 26 inch gain twist Bartlein barrel. I used Lapua brass and F-210 primers.

53.0gr R-26 2987
53.5gr R-26 2927
54.0 gr R-26 3057 Ejector slot mark from Model 70 bolt face

I get much faster speeds with VV N-560 with similar pressure.

I tried R-26 in the spacious 6.5 WSM case with both 130 Sciroccos and 140 Sierra GKs. I got to 65 gr with both bullets without pressure signs. The bullets landed close to my 66.6 gr Retumbo control loads with 140 Berger Hunting VLDs at 300 yards. Actually R-26 loads were 2 inches higher on the paper at 300. Nice group too.

So I'm new to long range hunting forum. I am shooting a Savage 110 HS in 338 Lapua. My go too load has been 88.5 grains H1000 with lapua brass and a 300 grain berger hybrid and a fed 215m primer. Velocity is a consistent 2760 with that load. Using the same bullet and primer and set .015 off the lands as I always load I changed it up to reloader 26 to try at 90.6 grains charge weight. The rifle shot a 5/8 inch group at 100 yard zero at 3130fps primers looked good no heavy bolt lift. So far reloader 26 seems to be a winner in my book. I have more load work to do to fact find but no complaints from me.

The guys at Swift tested the 130 Scirocco with R26 for me in the 270 WSM. 71 grains yielded 3451 fps with a 1" group of five shots. 69 grains got 3342 fps and a .7" group.

Given your results and theirs this looks like a promising powder for the WSM.

They tested R33 and reached full case capacity at 78 grains. That gave 3264 fps at 54k PSI and a .4" group.

Note, they test with a 24" barrel.
