New reloader powders RL-23 and RL-26

Finally got my 300 WSM back. Rem 700 with 26 inch 1-12 twist. RE 23 69.0 gr win primer 190 VLD=3009. Signs of high pressure.
RE26 69.0gr win primer 190 VLD=3024. Pressure less than above load.
RE26 69.5gr=3069.
RE26 70.0gr=3110.pressure still good.

Is that in a long action? I loaded up 67 grains in a 300 wsm with a 185 and the powder is already up into the neck.

Don,
Where does Norma MRP fall in QL burn rates and energy?
Thanks

Sorry about omitting RL-33 from the NitroCheme list.

Alliant may advertise that Reloader 23 is temperature insensitive. I will ask you, "is Reloader 22 or 25 temperature insensitive?". Those powders are made in the same factory as Reloader 23. I will bet the amount of retardant is the only difference between Reloader 19, 22, 23 and 25.

At the time that I began reloading for my favored Model 70s and Mauser 98s, surplus 4831 and H870 were the slowest powders available. Norma 205 became briefly available but it was expensive and hard to find. Then Alliant Reloader 22 became available and a game changer. I shot tens of pounds of it in the .264 Win, 270 Weatherby, 7mm Remington Mag and 300 Weatherby Magnum. I developed a lot of loads like the 200 Speer flat base spitzer over Reloader 22 in the 300 Weatherby or the 140 Partition over RL-22 in the 7mm Remington Mag. My 400 yard coyote load was Reloader 19 with 100gr Sierras in the 264 Win Mag. It was the 1990s before H-1000 and RL-25 became available.

If Alliant says their RL-23 is insensitive to temperatures why not believe it until proven otherwise? Just because they make it at the same facility does not mean it is going to act like RL-22 or RL-25.

Many of our old standby powders are being reformulated to be less sensitive to temperature. I have heard on several occasions that IMR 7828 was changed and it is less sensitive than in the past. Many think Hodgdon is to blame because they acquired IMR.

I recently was able to compare performance with RL-17 in a sporter 6mm-284 with 95 gr classic hunters. I had data from 45 to 90 degrees F. Velocity change with this cartridge is 1.11 fps change per degree.

Lets wait and see what others report on RL-23 and temperature changes.

+1

Lets hope it is as advertised.

Can you tell us why you are angry with Alliant?

I am not angry with Alliant. I have said in this thread that I am thankful that Alliant is adding powders for the diminishing reloading market. They are trying to help us. They brought the NitroCheme chemists to Florida to make Alliant 4000-MR and 2000-MR. They imported RL-23 and RL-26. Reloader 17 produces fantastic velocity compared to the single base 4350s or even double base VV N-550 near its burn rate. I expect great velocity from RL-26. I do not have the same expectation for RL-23.

It is a short action Rem 700. I had so much trouble with the factory rem extractor I got a PTG bolt with the mini m16 extractor problem solved. RE 22 is in the neck with 68 gr. I have put 70 in them. They are compressed loads with Berger 190. My chamber has a shallow throat. When I load the Berger they will not fit in the magazine. I load them with a OAL of 2.920 - 2.930. I load 180 with 66 gr of IMR 4831 and put them in the box for follow up shots. Not much difference in impact from 300 yards in from my rifle.

I'm particularly interested in the RL26 in a 26" barreled 300 Win Mag with 215 Hybrids. Berger actually gave me load data for RL23, RL26 and RL33. As a test, I loaded up their listed max load for RL33 into my 300 Win case (because I have RL33 on hand) and there was no way you could even start the bullet in the case.
I've attached the load data below that Berger sent. As you can see, the COAL is completely inaccurate as I couldn't even start the bullet in the case mouth due to the powder being up in the neck.
However, the RL26 just might be worth trying.
Another thing I'm curious about is whether RL26 acts similar to RL33 in that in needs to be close the rifling to get a good, consistent burn started to produce low ES. Would be nice to load magazine length and still have good ES.

I think RE26 needs to be close to the lands as well. 26 has to be denser. I got 71.8 gr in my 300WSM and it is not in the neck. I have 3 loaded and ready. It has a slower burn rate than RE 25 so I may be wasting my time. My gun has 1-12 twist so I can't stabilize anything over 190. I can get 3,000fps with 69 gr RE22 with 20-25 ES. I am hoping for 3,100 fps and ES under 30. I haven't done much with the RE 23 yet. It seems to build more pressure than RE 22.

:)I have checked the velocity on 4 of my 190 with the RE 26. I checked 2 last week 75 outside 3152, 3152. Today I checked two more 60 degrees out 3130, 3120. The 3120 was a different lot of VLDs and it was .20 off the lands. Think I am sold.
