The truth is, it is about shooting a lot and get very acustomed with your rifle, thats how the most amazing shoots were made. Shooting a very expensive cheytac custom rifle but not having the money to shoot many thousand of rounds through it doesnt get you anywhere. Factory cnc mchined rifles can infact shoot just as well as custom made ones.
If your lucky and get a very good barrel it will even outshoot the custom rifle, thats a fact.
Though i still think those savage actions are trash... ,

My old trashy Savage 110s with Shilen barrels shoot great and yes, my 338 EDGE 30" bull barrel with muzzle brake from Shilen will put them way out there and very accurate. Hogue stock and Vortex scope

The looks/laughs/judgement is probably what I get when I do the opposite and show up to hunt elk with a .375 Snipetac. Folks gonna judge no matter what you do. There are plenty of guys on this site that judge you when you hunt long range. Imagine what that fella could have done with something ballistically "better", he was obviously on his game that day.
My first long range rifle was a 112 in 7mm RemMag, one of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned. How's this for a laugh; the thought has popped up in my head more than once to sell my amazingly accurate full custom .375 Snipetac and doing what jasent is doing with a 112 Savage .338 and turning it into a XC (except I'd want the .33 version, probably carbon wrapped barrel). I would just like the lighter rifle and sacrificing a little performance doesn't bother me...much. Crazy huh?!

You ever truly want to sell the .375 would be interested.

I like my 338 EDGE but my best gun is my 375 RUM, pushes hard, fun to shoot, VERY accurate Shilen barrel. I chambered it on my old Craftsman 12" lathe. Great hobby!

HELL YEAH RANDY - nothing better than kicking the *** of a rich man that buys a ten grand gun a 5 grand scope shows up in a 100k suv and kicking his ***. when sports become about money the outcome is not good. congrats this country needs more randy's to be respected.

The 1moa reticle in my Weaver K4 would cover a 20" target at 2,000yds so just black out the target and squeeze. A great barrel and a great marksman will get it there.

I think some ( a lot) of the comments assume this was just a factory rifle from Savage, the only thing that was left factory was the action chambered to a barrel from Savage. Everything else was as folks would call Custom built - stock, trigger, high moa picatinny rail, scope bi-pod etc.

So its really not a fair comparison when saying a feller out shot the rich kids custom high dollar rigs with a off the shelf rifle The only difference really is a Savage chambered the barrel to a Savage action versus a gun smith. If I were to have had my 338 Barrett there that day then it would of been more of a factory rifle do to the design of the 98B and theres not a lot you can change out to improve the accuracy.

I will say for folks wanting to get into shooting steel we have told many that for a 260. 6.5 stuff the heavy barrel Savage LRPs were great right out of the box.

We had a great time shooting at Camp Atterbury that day and it was fun seeing Randy make three impacts on the steel that morning. He's a great shot as many there and the 338LM was on fire shooting very well.

My brother in law has one of these Savages. I have only fired it off once, my first 1000 yard attempt. He had me shoot at a 9" plate of steel at 1000 yards. GONG! I doubt I will ever get one, but his seems to be a shooter.
Why are small groups so addicting? LOL
