New Cartridge for Hunting?

Dang these new rifle itches can become a pain. :D

I guess I'm just wanting something else to play with. LOL

I'm really leaning towards a 300 Norma in the lightest configuration I can get.

If your gonna do the 300 Norma I'd get my hands on some Lapua brass or ADG. The ADG is suppose to be in the works. Neither one will last long when its available.
I would also consider the Improved version.

Stay with the 300WM. Just got back from Africa and it's good for most. You have to walk but extremely rewarding. If you have ah itch for a new caliber go for it. The 300 does most. You can always barrel the 6.5 everything

Ok, here's the scoop. I have a 300WM that I've just re-barreled re-stocked into my long range hunting rig. It's approx. 9 lbs with optics and with hand loads will shoot 1/2MOA with the Berger 210VLD's @ 2800fps. Don't ask me why, but I have the itch for a new build.

Questions:

1. Will I gain that much from a newer "latest and greatest" cartridge.
2. If so, what cartridge would you go with?
I bet if you posed this question to the animals you hunted they'd all be scratching their heads

Build you a 28" barrel 30-06,just because.....You can shoot the same bullets as your 300 if you want, you can use the same primers,I use magnum in mine, brass is easy to find and cheap too and the 30-06 is never a mistake.....

Why not build a .338 Norma Magnum AI version? If you like the 300 Norma. Great round, but you have s 300 WM. Maybe a 6.5 variant or 6mm? Want a hunting rig or just something different

Instead of trying to find that round that will hit the target why not learn to shoot what you already have ? I used to shoot a 22-250 that would always hit the target at 1000 yds, standing or running it was always a 1 shot kill. Learn to shoot your gun, become part of it and it will become part of you.

No way I'd add PRC anything to the stable. You obviously already reload, so if you must have a 6.5 for hunting I'd get a 264 win mag or a 6.5-284. Probably leaning toward 6.5-284 for brass. Personally I wouldn't bother because neither will best the win mag so it's a step down.

Idk about 300 Norma. If memory serves the 300 PRC "bested" it due to ES/SD issues, and if that's the case a 300 win with a nice mag length is already doing anything PRC will do.

Barrels are consumables. Put some money away for another barrel. Also, consider a 30/28 Nosler, 7 Mag throated for 180g berger hunting with a 28" barrel is awesome. NO flies on a 7/300(practical) or Mashburn...all will fit on your existing action. One stock, one great trigger, one great scope. Takes only minutes to change out an Barrel, headspacing is done by the gunsmith at the time of chambering.

If you are not familiar with Switch barrel rifles, then educate yourself in this area.

Practice, practice, practice Windy days, rainy days, clear days
