New 30/375 wildcat

For those of you who might be considering building an S.I., the 215 Berger Hybrids loaded to reach the lands have a coal of 3.705" so you don't necessarily need a custom box to multiple load. Also, they may shoot well seated deeper? I haven't had a chance to try yet......Rich

I'm waiting to hear your results with the 215's and if you could try the 230's also.

I am trying to locate some 230's. Brunos supply has some OTM's in Az. but I'm wanting to get some Hybrid match with the higher b.c. The 215's shot one hole at 100 yards but haven't had a chance to shoot long range yet.......Rich

Re: 5 Powders, 16 different loads, Less than 1" @ 100yds

Photo from Rich with this caption: "This was 5 different powders and 16 different loads with velocities varying by 250 fps. Some were really hot and could not be considered accuracy loads. The lower shot that is crossed out was not part of the 16-shot group."

Rich; you lucky dog!

Thanks again Paul. I guess at this point I feel like my investment was worth it. Now if I can get the barrel melonited before I wear it out:D Seriously, I have had some rifles that shot pretty well, but I've NEVER had one of this capability. It has a lot of good components for sure, but I think it has to start with the foundation. That BAT action is really quality.......Rich

I couldn't sleep last night and ended up re-reading this entire thread! I just want to thank Rich (elkaholic) and many of the other guys that contributed so much to this thread. It took a lot of time for Rich to keep us up to date and it is very much appreciated by this LRH! This is why LRH is such a great place. There is some awesome info on just about every aspect of shooting in this great thread! Reloading, wildcatting, die prep, cartridge profile calculations, and a great story including the strategy and thought process of how Rich got to the end results . . . and even some gun porn ( still can't wait to see the final melonited barrel) and some fantastic initial groups! It has it all! Great read!

Rich,

So you ended up using the 3 die system for forming and a final fire-form right? And with what original brass?

Scot E.

Scot.....thank you for the kind words but I look at this project as a group effort. I just happen to be the beneficiary of a lot of good input besides having a heck of a lot of fun in the process! We won't tall about the grandkids inheritance:D I would like to give a special thanks to Paul (PHORWATH) for his engineering skills and willingness to share his time.
As you said, this is a great forum with a lot of swell guys!
Yes, I did use three steps to preform and then fire form starting with the 375 parent. I used 17 grains of blue dot and cornmeal which came out great! I think you could certainly short cut this process a little but the brass comes out so nice that I don't mind and it really isn't that difficult. I never lost one brass in the process! Its still early but it looks like I will get quite a few firings/case when I settle down to an accuracy load. When I was checking max loads, etc., I fired a few until I loosened the primers and then backed off accordingly. This action is so strong that it is easy to overload because the typical signs just aren't there!
BAT has a bunch of actions etc., going in for melonite the middle of this month so I will send my barrel along with their stuff at that time. (only $50)! Paul reminded me that I probably shouldn't wear my barrel out before I send it in:D
I hope some of you guys will take advantage that are looking for a good 30 build. Maybe we can start a 30/375 S.I. club:)........Rich

I took a little time today to compare some various bullet weights in my SXR line for long range hunting. Some of the b.c.'s are estimated but should be very close. Some of the velocities are also estimated based on what I have already learned from my chrono on certain bullet weights. Trajectory of course would vary by local conditions.
The SXR's will expand below 1300' so this chart shows what the effective range might be before transonic problems might occur. For the Berger guys, the 215 and 230 hybrid match bullets are not far behind b.c. wise compared to my 218 and 228 grainers. The expansion would be the only major difference. This might give some food for thought for potential 30/375 S.I. builders. Data was based on 300 yard zero....Rich

Rich,

I would already have a Sherman if I could find a good Smith I could trust out here in NY. And FFLS fees are inflated.

But I decided to cross to the dark side and bought a 110 BA 338 Lapua this weekend.

Now I can buy barrels and not have to deal with FFL's and Smiths locally.

So in the not too distant future I will be taking you up and setting up a switch barrel SI stable:)

Funds allowing of course. LOL

Aldon.....That would be great! Let me know when you are ready to roll. Congrats on your purchase. That should get the job done on those whitetails!:D

Well it would get em dead and gutted without having to use the knife:) lol

My dad bought a weatherby 300 when I was a kid. It was a monster at the time...He helped out his nam buddy who was in need of some cash. Anyway, i will never forget the first couple of WhiteTails he took with that monnster magnum. Bang Flops for sure. No tracking deer anymore. But Carnage!!!

All my kids live out west so for now this is more about building long range target but western hunting is in the long term cards.
