NEW 270 Winchester Brass for my new Savage axis II overwatch.

Starlite, the .270 Win brass is longer than that for the .30-06. You can neck it down to .277 use, but it will be too short. I would recommend finding the correct brass.
Yeah I was aware. Just thought it might be stretched (from the shoulder) during the resizing process.
Thankx for the replay though.

Wow, this thread is all over the place.

Here are my thoughts:
1.) since it's a dedicated bear hunting gun, I wouldn't care about brass life. Winchester brass will be fine. In fact, it's my preference over Hornady, Federal, and Remington brass. How many bears are you planning to shoot?
2.) load that gun up with a full case of RL26 over 150 or 160 partitions. Velocity should be just above 3000 FPS, even with that 20" bbl.

I shoot multiple 270s, and both the 130SST and 145 ELD-X bullets. The SSTs are more accurate, pushing around 3200 fps. The ELD-Xs are surprisingly fast at 3100 fps, and also accurate. Both are similar cup and core construction. The SST is a tougher bullet due to the canalure and interlock ring. Both great for deer. For bear and moose, I would go heavier than 130 gr, but a well placed shot will get it done.
However, for bear/moose, the partition bullets are just tougher and will serve you well at < 300 yards. Get some second blems for less than 50 cents each online at SPS.

Thread is all over the place. Agreed. I did kinda have other questions within my original post. So I guess that's on me. I'm ok with this though. I do really appreciate your input WRT the SST/ELD-X pills.
as to the bear count...well...let's say 2 per season. As per my previous posts, I have great difficulty finding any RL powder here in eastern Canada. I have. H4350, Varget, hybrid 100v, 3031, 4064, 7828, staBall 6.5, superformance, VV N-160, 4895, and others that won't come to mind currently. I certainly welcome your advice on a load combination that will get me to 3000fps ( with the listed powders) or any powder other the RL as that unicorn dust just ain't in these parts.
Although this will be for bear, I still love to shoot and reload...so. I'll be working out this 270 a lot and likely out to 1000m (for fun). Perhaps I'll just buy the clearance federal fusion with the accubond projectile to hunt with. Then shoot this Winchester brass and Hornady pills at paper. YOLO right!
thankx again for your input.

Haven't used 270 brass in a while.

But I have used lot of WI cheater brass in the past, I still have a couple of bags for 7mm-08 and 7mm Rem Mag, I got them about 8 years ago that still came in the blue bag, when their brass was good. I believe they changed manufacturer or something like that but not too sure.

Their quality has really gone down the last few years. I still use some on my 7mm-08 thats on its 10th or 11th firing, but again I got it a few years ago.

Thankx for the replay. I did notice some of the blue bagged brass there. I just grabbed 2 off the top that weren't in the blue bag. Didn't think much of it as I've never used win brass other then NOTO 5.56 which seems OK. IM wondering if Win brass was manufactured in New Haven CT. Might explain why the brass quality changed. Didn't that place close in the mid 2000s ~2006?
i was thinking of calling Winchester. Not sure if they'll do anything but at least I can share my experience

once I contacted Hornady WRT some 223 brass; was having all kinds of misfireS. Couldn't really get to the bottom of the issue as I couldn't sent the brass over the boarder. As beat we could figure it was likely the spring in the bolt. ( was a rem 700 VLS ). However, Hornady said we'll send out some new brass from their Canadian dist. Ended up with 222 brass. Lol. I call that company. They now didn't have 223 brass in stock. They kindl sent out some 6.5CM brass. I now may have enough Bullets to hunt a lifetime of deer and coyotes. I love those GMX for deer and coyotes. Love the Barnes too.

H4350 works well in the 270 win, but in my opinion H4831SC is better. Velocity of both is acceptable, but 200-300 FPS under the RL 26. The 7828 should work well also, on par with the 4831, especially at the 130-150 gr class bullets. Of all the powders you listed, that's the one I would concentrate on.

For long range, definitely stick with the 145 ELD-X. Be aware any of the new high bc bullets over 150gr, as the will likely not stabilize in your barrel.

Also the federal fusion is a good round, as it is a bonded bullet. However, it is made by Speer, and is a different bullet than the Accubond "tipped" bullet by Nosler. Did you mean the old Federal "Premium" offering? I'd still go the 150 gr route for bear.

I suggest you pick up a box of Hornady Superformance loaded 130gr ammo with the SST bullet - if you can find it. To see how they shoot. This will give you approx 3100 FPS from your gun, and is the fastest 270 factory ammo available - especially so in short barrels. Note: this has 65 gr of some ball powder, but it's definitely not the Superformance powder from Hodgdon.

I'm cheap, so the 130 SSTs are my go to bullet for general reloading/ shooting. Plus they shoot great in every 270 I have. They are $23 USD from Palmetto State Armory online. The Nosler Ballistic tip is similar, but does not have a cannelure. It's also around $20 USD per 50, and even seconds aren't cheaper than $16.

There is a good thread in the hunting rifle reloading section on the 270 Win over on 24hourcampfire called "Good .270 Loads" as well as in this sites reloading section. For H4831, you can't go wrong with a 58-60 gr load over a 130 SST, but you'll likely be in the 2850-2900 FPS range with a 20" bbl.

Let us know how the Staball works out. I was pondering picking up some of that for a 270 work up, but with 16 lbs of RL26 remaining, and it working so well - I've shelved that idea.

I can definitely get some superformance rounds. yeah WRT the Hodgdon powders there not the same. With the 129gr SST & SF POWDER. I tried to achieve a calculated equivalent in my 2 6.5CM (Finnlight and bergara) I didn't get there. I got better velocity from the StaBall 6.5 ( very similar in appearance to SF).
currently my Finnlight is my stalking deer/bear rifle. I shoot bear with a Hornady 160gr RN / H4350 with DRT effect. i'll definitely give 4831 a try once that new unicorn reappears. (not any time soon; much like H1000, etc;)

I loaded for several axis rifles. None were 270 win so I cant help you there. The only 270 cal Ive loaded for was a 270 wsm. For what it is, the axis is one of the best bargains out there. Ive heard serveral folks say they had a hard time getting the 145 eld x to shoot. I do like hornady bullets very much. 140 accubonds have had a good reputation for accuracy in 270s. I would think your best accuracy would probably come from a berger 140 gr and below. If it were me, I would give the 135 berger classic hunter a try.

I personally have had great luck with the 145 ELDX in the 270 win. I replicate the factory ammo as best I can and really like the accuracy. Have NOT used on anything bigger than deer however. I'm not sure I would try it on a bear given the experiences people cite with ELD M/X in bigger calibers. Best of luck.
And I reload Hornady once fired brass with no issues.

When Winchester moved their production location their brass quality took a dive. At least you got somewhat the brass replaced.

I shot 130gr and 150gr bullets on the 270 Win, heavier than that as Stammster mentioned, they wont stabilize.

I'm a fan of Hornady bullets, mostly the SST and Interbond. The SST when used correctly it kills fast. Yeah its a cheap bullet vs a Nosler Ballistic Tip but I've found it performs better, it holds together better and penetrates more. Be careful not to push the light for caliber bullets too fast.

As for the Superformance ammo, it has not grouped well for me, both of my 7mm-08's dislike it, its with the 139gr SST and it groups over 2" at 100m.

I reload with the 139gr SST and thats a different story, it groups under half MOA on my rifle and just under 0.75" on my wife's. Hers loves the 120gr Ballistic Tip (picture on my avatar)

The cheaper American Whitetail ammo with the 139gr interlock actually groups way better at half MOA or less on both rifles. Also a great hunting bullet, not for longer ranges but at 400 yds or less it worka great.

Another powder option if you can get it, is RL16 would work great on the 270 Win, its right there with H4831sc and 7828, and temp stable unlike RL26.

For my 7mm Rem Mag I found some RL23, little slower than RL26 but temp stable. Looking at a couple of reloading books RL23 would also be a great option for the 270 with 150gr bullets.

Hope this helps and stay safe.

I agree with the above. I've got a couple guns where the Superformance shoots around 1-1.2", but others don't like it at all. However the American Whitetail 130 shoot sub MOA at 100 yds all day with every 270 I have using those interlock solid base bullets.
Also pushing the SST, or any cup and core, above 3000 fps impact velocity on game is not a good idea.

Man I really need to get my hands on some RL. Is this stuff better then Varget or H4350 for stability and great SDs?

Shooting my four 270 Winchesters I get top velocity with RL16 , best 200 yard accuracy with H4350 with 130s, and top velocity with RL 26 with 150s. I get similar velocity with 140s using RL23 and H4831SC. H4831SC gives me fantastic velocity and accuracy with 140 & 150 Nosler BTs and Accubonds. My best 200 yard group, extreme spread and single digit standard deviation is less than 0.5" with the Accubonds and H4831SC. When I found that load I bought a bunch of the same lot of H4831SC and haven't tried anything else.

I got some RL16 and H4350 two weeks ago from Brownells and I just ordered RL23 this past week, you might want to try there.

RL26 does give you more speed but its temp sensitive, here we already hit 115 degrees several times this summer and it didn't work out for me when I tried it several years ago when I first got my 7mm Rem Mag.

I got the 3 powders mentioned above, the first two for my 7mm-08 and the last one for my 7mm Rem Mag, after lots of research in this site and a few others.

All three powders will work on your 270 Win with bullets from 115gr to 150gr.
