My son wants to get into long range shooting.

He is partly bald and can't grow a manbun, but he wants a 6.5 creedmoor. I am looking at a Howa 1500. Anyone know about their quality or have one?
I have one in a Chasis. But have yet to shoot it. It's only been 10 years. lol But I do like my 25 06 on WT deer. So much so I bought another Hogue stock and 243 Barrel for when the manbun gets shot out. But at this rate I may never use it. I think they are as good or better built than the Rem 700

I would consider a Tikka, Lipsey's Ruger American they have a 22"6.5 CM and a Remington 700 ADL - you can upgrade the stock later.

You did not mention scopes but I would suggest you look at a Sightron S-1 with 2 MOA hashes up to 20 moa for about $250. I think there is a lot of benefit in early on learning to run calculations and seeing the entire "print out" of the trajectory on something like JBM Ballistics and using the hash marks in reticles as opposed to starting right off with a phone an app and "how many clicks do I turn this knob."

Tikka is really hard to beat for the price. Have a few that are track drivers. That said, I have two Howa 1500s that shoot lights out. One is a pencil barreled mountain carbon. The other is actually a Weatherby Camilla (action is rebranded Howa). Camilla was 1.25 moa from the factory. Put a Carbon 6 on it and it's been great.

What does he and you consider long range? 600? 1000? 1 mile? It matters. At 600 you can watch youtube, use Hornady 4DOF and get really close. At 1000, you need better equipment and consistent loads plus some training. At a mile you must have some serious education. I have not done a mile but have shot to 1000 several times. The 6.5CM is a fine cartridge for the task. My son and I went out two weeks ago to 1000yds. I was using my handloads. My loads are Norma brass, 142gr SMK, H4350 and Fed GMM210 primers. My extreme spread is 27 and my standard deviation is 8. I was very accurate with elevation and just needed to call the wind. My son was using Norma Match ammo. His velocities were all over the place and he struggled. I let him use my rig and his hits became very consistent. He now wants me to handload for him.

Truly, the very best option would be for you and your son to go to Mr Eagleman's class in Eufaula AL. I live 45 minutes from there and want to do the class soon. Once you are done there, book a guide for some great bass fishing on Lake Eufaula.
