My 338 Sherman Shortmag

You should find a good load between 2750 and 2800 with the std FB reamer at 2.970 (to the lands) with a 250 Berger
Thats about what I thought. In reality, sometime we get consumed with velocity. Thats still one heck of a deadly punch out as far as Ill ever need it to be. Unless I single shot it, would another 50 fps justify another action, and barrel for the same cartridge? Maybe 😂, but probably not. Thatll get me to 850-900 yds on elk. With a Berger, I think that increases a little. Thanks

Im leaning toward another standard throated barrel.

Mine didn't require the ejection port to be opened up. Just the bottom of the receiver had to be milled for the long box and bolt stop.

I think the XM just has this already done.

Can load 215s close to about 3.050" and still eject.
Thanks for the info. I could end up in a whole other rifle in same cartridge 😂 Sounds crazy, but Im liking this 338 SS, big time. I should have built a hunting rifle from the get go. At the time I didnt think I needed another hunting rifle, and I still dont, but sure want a short action 338 SS hammer to carry.

I was keeping an eye on your posts during testing cause you were about the only one running a standard throat in the beginning. Did you end up with any good brass before lengthening the throat? Seems like brass was limiting you.

Yes I have 338SS headstamped ADG brass now. MUCH better.

I'm on version 3 of mine, hindsight I should have built it like this from the getgo. Now has an HS prescision LTR stock, factory SA hinged bottom metal and mag box, chopped the barrel down to 22" and turned down to a heavy sporter contour (.700 at the muzzle) with no brake. Now has a Leupold 4.5-14 cds scope. Much more useful to me like this.

Don't think I've shared my 338SS yet. Defiance rebel (customized with deep flutted bolt, integral lug, drilled out bolt handle) with a proof 24" 9.4 twist, fine firearms TI brake, wyatts center feed extended Mag. Weight 6lbs 13oz without scope, 8 lbs 9.7oz with Burris Signature HD scope. Found a good load with 213HHs at 2940fps. Still need to try my Berger 250s and varget. Next on the chopping block!
Target is at 100yds. First shot, adjusted scope. Then 3 shots. Video is of a sweet hammer trail at 200yds.

Thats a fine looking rifle!

This is my first chassis rifle. MPA chassis. Origin action, fluted #9 Bartlein @ 26". This thing is hands down the best shooting rifle Ive ever had. The target is typical 3 shots at 100. 200 yd targets are just about as good. Havent gotten a chance to shoot at long ranges, due to shootings bans all last year. Hottest driest year on record, with lots of fires. I will have a hunting rifle in this cartridge soon. This rifle weighs 17#, and sure is fun to shoot.

Good looking rifle and good shooting!

I went cheap on my first wildcat. Didn't know what I was getting into. It is not a SS but a 338 Sherman. These things always turn out heavier than wanted.

This is where I had to stop due to the shooting bans, and I think I can go higher and find good accuracy, we'll see about that. 250 gr Berger EH, 60.5 gr Varget is giving me 2817 fps, 5 ES. No pressure signs.
Oh the winter blues. If Im not doing it, Im thinking about it. All winter long!
