My 338 Sherman Shortmag

Just bought a defiance AnTi in short action but I have other project I'd like to build as well. I have a long action too. Or I could just order up a Max chambered barrel , screw off my 7Max barrel and put the 338 on. Pretty easy switch. Point being I want to make a light, short rifle for my planned Alaska trip in '24. Thinking that mono bullet is the way to go but I cringe when I consider the BC.

What distances are you expecting to take animals at? I personally build my 338ss for 700yards max and I know that sub 500 yards is more likely 95% of the time, for where I'm packing this rifle. So I'll take the higher velocity of the lighter mono's, vs the high BC, but slower velocity of the longer mono's. As I recall the 250 Berger was 2650ish, which is a 200-350fps decrease over the lighter Hammer's. If I was building a rifle for 500+ yard hunting on a regular basis, I'd choose a larger cartridge

Take a look at the SBD2 250gr bullet from Badlads Precision. Think it might interest you. I run the 240 Bulldozer in my 338SS with a long throat.

What sort of velocity have you seen from the 240 Bulldozer?

As stated, check out the 250 SBDII. Has a .410 G7. No cringe necessary

With an 18"-20"?
she looks pretty sleek. How is the terminal performance at 500 yds?
@tdot, 700 yds Max would satisfy men the hammer has the BC of a Volkswagen. Wind is not my friend. 2xx frightens me
I'm running a 25" 9.3tw Rock Creek @2906' w/4500'lbs muzzel; @500yds 2280' w/2700'lbs; good to 950yds 1800' w/1700'lbs. Sorry to say I've not had the opportunity to bloody this set up but my Wyoming elk tag & hopefully that will change this fall.

My barrel came in last week, barrel swap complete I went to the range twice this weekend.

ELDX 230g hit 2845 using 60g of Varget, COAL 2.75. Heavy bolt
Nosler 180g AB hit 2682 using 54g of AA2520, COAL 2.70

I liked how 2520 performed when using the Nosler 180 AB.
so today I loaded 230 ELDX, AA2520 COAL 2.72
57.5g and I had heavy bolt lift. 2680 per MagnetoSpeed

ZA Origin SA, PVA turned the Light Palma barrel

I built an SS w/ a 22" barrel, medium length action. Had great success with the 213HH, velocity was close to 3000fps. Rethroated the barrel & the smith made a mistake and went way further then I asked for. End result was throat was too long for the 213HH, thankfully the 235HH worked well at 2850fps.

Max is appropriate in a medium length action. I'd personally look at the Mega in a Medium or Long action. I was in your position (timing wise) as the Max was coming out, but due to timing I couldn't wait for the brass to become available, so went SS. I wish I'd waited and gone for the Max, as is it, I'll likely rechamber to the Mega, once everything is available.
A buddy and I are ready to jump into the 338 Sherman something pool. Trying to decide which one. He has a Rem 700 magnum donor action and mine is a Tikka magnum action. We were ready to pounce on the new 338 Mega but then my buddy pointed out that it burns 20ish more grains of powder to get 100-150 more fps. He's thinking we go 338 SS for the efficiency but I'm thinking go big even if not as efficient. What's everybody's thoughts if you had these actions and could start a new build right now?

I love my 338SS. I run the 240 Bulldozers at 2900+. Like you said efficient case.

I loved that bullet in my 338 max. But it's not listed any more. Do you know if you can still get it?

I'm not sure. I know they were developing the SBD2 line. I bought enough 2 yrs ago, I think to last many a hunting seasons. I haven't checked lately with them.
