Just bought a defiance AnTi in short action but I have other project I'd like to build as well. I have a long action too. Or I could just order up a Max chambered barrel , screw off my 7Max barrel and put the 338 on. Pretty easy switch. Point being I want to make a light, short rifle for my planned Alaska trip in '24. Thinking that mono bullet is the way to go but I cringe when I consider the BC.
What distances are you expecting to take animals at? I personally build my 338ss for 700yards max and I know that sub 500 yards is more likely 95% of the time, for where I'm packing this rifle. So I'll take the higher velocity of the lighter mono's, vs the high BC, but slower velocity of the longer mono's. As I recall the 250 Berger was 2650ish, which is a 200-350fps decrease over the lighter Hammer's. If I was building a rifle for 500+ yard hunting on a regular basis, I'd choose a larger cartridge
