Most potent long range elk cartridge with .473 bolt face

Definitely do not need a magnum cartridge rifle to kill an elk at most distances. Keep the standard .473 bolt face and go with the .284 cartridge. 280/280 AI/ 284 are all good options without fire forming brass.

I know where theres a raffle offering a beautiful 280AI for a good cause! Just win that one you wont need to build another! Grin

I'mbuilding another hunting rifle. I was wanting a long range boomer like a 338 edge to kill elk out to 900yds, but I ended up with a #4 30 cal 1-10" twist barrel and a standard long action. I also have a 7mm 1-8" twist #5 barrel. I am guessing that the hardest hitting cartridge with this combo would either be the 30-06 Sherman or the 280 Sherman but maybe there are other options out there. I don't really like the idea of having to fire form all my brass first though. Would I just be better off swapping bolts with someone and building a 300 win mag or 300 PRC?

This is why I never ask what to build ... I just do it and share later.

Ya I opened that door before. Asking about the 243 for speed goats. Started a real blow up on another forum. Obviously there are several good antelope cartridges but it was my first time out so asked for advice on if it was enough gun. Had advice from 204s thru 50 BMGs. Most were logical responses so it helped but sure blew up fast. Very opinionated topic when asking advice on a cartridge.

LOL, aye Sir!

There has been no mention of a 30/06 AI. If you have a 30 cal barrel and a standard bolt face, the AI will step it up to handle heaver bullets and it should Add 100 to 150 ft/sec to the 30/06. You can even make it an improved version for more potential.

A 300 Sherman is an Improved version of the 30-06 AI, for some reason it and the 30 SS are not as popular as they should be, excellent performance in a beautiful case though it's one of the few I have not built either though.

If a guy is serious about 1000 yard elk and your working a lot in the 800+ then it's nice to notch it up from the 06 case head IMO, push more bullet with BC and speed to keep the wound channels better, I'm still trying to get my 30 Sherman Mag barrel on for this next season but my average elk range is 600-800 yards and will push to the 1400 ish so there's where I like a little more sauce.

The only reason I mentioned it was that It could be built without any changes to the action and reamed to except the AI version which will improve the case capacity from average of 58 grains powder capacity to 65 grains and if the .425 neck length is reduced to .300 or .325 case capacity can be increased to 70 to 75 grain capacity. This would allow it to shoot 180 grain bullets over 3000 ft/sec.

It is still not on par with the big magnums, but most shots will be well within the 600 to 700 yard range for all but the best shots.

Just an option if on a budget.

I would just go 280 ackley and be done with it. It will kill elk out past 1000.
A.I. is a great round but it leaves out "most potent"

The 300 Sherman holds 76-77 grains H20 depending on brass manufacturer and has a .317" neck. It will run a 180 at 3100+ and a 215 at 2950+ with no problem.
Case forming is nearly as easy as the A.I.
All you need to do is partial neck size to form the false shoulder and fire away.
I didnt have RL26, N565, etc, when I had mine, so velocity would be attained even easier. Mine was a 28" barrel. Loss per inch of barrel is around 20'
