Meanwhile on RS they're killin bear, deer, elk , and moose with .223 and 77gr TMK.

LOL well the whole purpose of this thread was to illustrate what the 77 TMK and like bullets are capable of. Not to take things to the extreme since other big game animals were also mentioned. As a student of terminal ballistics I keep open to other people's findings. I've had a conversation on the phone with Broz on another topic and highly value his opinion. But I will also say at one time people poo pooed using bullets like Bergers on big game including deer and elk. Even Berger did.
That kinda reinforces the point someone else made. Sure the 223/77TMK will kill up to including elk and other larger game; under perfect conditions. Hunting doesn't always offer those conditions. I prefer to have something that offers some offsets to less than ideal conditions.

I'm absolutely not opposed to using the .223 on whitetail and like size game. All 3 of my kids killed their first few deer with an H&R breakover single shot .223 using Federal TBBC bullets. And I enjoy shooting Whitetails, hogs and Axis with my fast twist 22-250AI.

Mike I would venture to guess that you and I have been killing deer for many years at this point in Texas with everything from 22-338 calibers. For me, I have spent way more time killing whitetails with a 223 over the years than I have anything else because of the number of deer that I've helped cull for ranches. Just happened to be the tool used for the job at that time.

All that said, I wholeheartedly agree with your statement here. We don't get the opportunity to go in the back yard and kill mulies, antelope or elk like a lot of those guys on RS. So no I **** sure wouldn't be taking a 223 on a multi thousand dollar hunt. I'm reaching for nothing short of my 30 Nosler or 338 Lapua, plain and simple. But when it come to the ole typical Texas whitetails I might be reaching for the plinker instead of the boomer!
Wholeheartedly agree. Just posted something very similar.

Mostly a lurker here; my focus is Elk hunting. I've read through that thread on RS. My take on this is that it depends on what type of hunting you do, and what your skills are. I hunted with archery for over 20 years, killing over 30 big game animals, and I get the concept of picking your shots, avoiding bone. I met a Wyoming Elk guide that shot a 25-06, but he freely admitted that he was "surgical" about shot placement on a bull Elk.

I shoot both a 264 win mag, and a 300PRC, and have seen how the 300 bucks the wind better than the 264. I love shooting the 264, but when I go on an Elk hunt where I might have a cross-canyon shot at a bull of a lifetime, I bring the 300PRC. I bet that 223 bullet does much worse in wind than my 264. Every Elk guide I have spoken with recommends clients start with a 7mm, and have a preference for the 30s; this is their advise after guiding over 1000 Elk hunts. Sometimes the perfect shot doesn't present itself, or the animal shifts just as you're squeezing off the shot, and you need a bullet that will do the job after hitting heavy bone. In my opinion, a 223 bullet cannot be expected to buck the wind on a cross canyon shot, and do the job after hitting heavy bone.

I ended up purchasing another 500 of the 77 TMK yesterday - definitely a great bullet. Haven't used the 77 TMK on game (yet), but I wouldn't hesitate on deer sized game. I've used my 22-250 AI and 22 CM with the 88 gr ELDM and it's worked great.

Here's the 88 ELDM in action out of my 22-250 AI. Buck was 315 yards:

88 ELDM out of my 22 CM at 430 yards on a doe antelope:

thanks dude, I'll check it out. Pretty easy round to load for but I'm always looking for what others like.
Pharseller has taken a bunch of elk with his 7-08 here in Oregon. And he posted on this thread taking a buck with his .223. Here's his posts.
