Looking for a new elk gun

Weatherby cartridges are some of the most accurate cartridges ever designed. Numerous long range world records have been held by them and matches won with them. I have built wby's for 35 years and they will shoot with anything out there. The 340 will shoot just as accurate as the ultramag. It gets about a 100 fps less velocity with between 10-15 grains less powder. Like I said I think the last model 70 I did which was a 375 H&H to 338-300 ultramag Didn't require a lot of work to make it feed the ultramag case. If that is true then I would go with the 338-300 ultramag for the little extra. You would not have to load it hot to get the 340 velocities where you would be loading the 340 hot to get it up toward the ultramag. Brass would be a little cheaper with the 340 since you can use the 375 H&H and neck them down then trim to length. I have one 340 that I built back in the 70's and it still shoots great. Matter of fact I am sitting here looking at a load with the sierra 215 gameking at 3287 fps that has 1 3/8" at 400 yards written by it.

I would try to get with one of the guys on here who has worked with the model 70 action a lot converting it to the ultramag case and see what kind of feeding problems you will have. If it will feed well that is where I would go. If not I know the 340 would feed perfectly since the standard mag case is what your action was designed for. The 340 will kill any elk at any range the ultramag will and the elk would never know the difference so you would not be limiting yourself. I have several big 338's that I shoot all the time. My 338-378's will shoot on average about 250 fps faster than the 338-300 ultramag and about 150 fps faster than my 338 Lapuas using 200-225 grain bullets. Then comes my 340 about a 100 fps slower than the ultramag. I have killed elk with all of them and from the 340 to the 338-378 they all do a good job. The 338-378 gets most of the work because of the extra velocity giving less time of flight and less wind drift. My accuracy load in it shoots the 225 accubond at 3475 fps with 124 grains of H-870. That varies depending on the batch of 870 which can be up to 5 grains batch to batch. I already gave you the accuracy load in the 340. I hope some of this makes some since but all in all you can't make a bad choice with one of these.

BB, my next suggestion (hope you're not tired of them) would be to get a brake that doesn't have holes on the bottom. the Gentry does. i do most of my shooting from the ground and when you have to pick stones out of your chin, you'll know why i didn't recommend the Gentry. the Holland quick discharge/radial port or Nate308 has a nice product. any baffle style will work better than the radial hole style.

My current elk gun is a .340wby. I've owned two of them and my father runs one. As you can tell I flat love them. My Accumark shot .5-.75 moa for 3 shots with little load work. I sold it as I wanted a lighter rifle for backpack hunts and now use a custom rem 700 with a #2 Lilja at 24". It weighs in a 6lbs without scope. And it shoots .5moa. right now it is a 6-700yd rifle with a good rest. I could stretch that a bit as I've shot out past 1000yds with it but in the field it takes some time to get set up for that kind of shot and with elk I haven't had that opportunity. I shoot Barnes TSX 225 gr and am switching to the TTSX. I'd like to try out the Bergers when they come out. Light barreled guns will shoot you just have to be patient with them when they heat up.

I loaded a friends 30-378 Weatherby Mark IV with very little development to shoot a 1" or less group @ 200 yrds. This was a completely stock rifle. I personally owned a 30-378 in a Sako that was also a sub moa rifle with every bullet I tried.

I would not call a Weatherby caliber inaccurate.

I used to use my Rem 700 BDL in 7 mm Mag for elk hunting but decided I wanted a bit more frontal area punch so I purchased a .338 Win Mag for the task. I'm using Hornady 225 Gr. Interbonds pills with a working load of 72.8 grains of RL#19 beneath it. It's a compressed load pushing a muzzle velocity of 2848 fps. out of a 24 inch barrel.

The 7 mag did the job,.. but there were times that after the shot they'd just stand there lookin' at ya',... and it always bothered me when they did that.

With the .338 there won't be any more of that to worry about.

Did you mis-type your muzzle velocity?

I think I have decided on the 338 Win Mag out of a 26" barrel. No mods to the gun to make it feed and it looks pretty potent out to 7-800 yards assuming I can get 2900 fps at the muzzle with the 225 Accubonds.

Thanks for all of the advice!

You can get 2950 with the 225 with the 338 winchester. The 338 winny is the biggest 338 you can shoot effectively without a muzzle brake on it. With the 200 ballistic tips the recoil is fairly mild at 3100 fps. The longest shot I ever made with the 338 win mag was a 72" moose in Alaska right at 1100 yards with the 200 ballistic tip. It will easily kill elk at the range you are looking at. You were asking what was the most you could get out of your action so that is why I just mentioned the big guns.

Yep,... sure as heck did !

That should read : 2848 fps,... Thanks for catching that !:)

Now that you have your mind made up, let me throw this at you :D

A 300 RUM shooting a 210 SMK @ 3150 fps will hit harder than a 338 WM shooting a 225 AB @ 2950 fps, at all ranges and out of the muzzle. The ballistics (trajectory, wind drift and TOF) are also a lot better.

1000 yds 300 RUM, 1901 fps, 1686 ftlbs KE, 57 lbft mom, 48" drift/10 mph wind
1000 yds 338 WM, 1587 fps, 1259 ftlbs KE, 51 lbft mom, 66" drift/10 mph wind

700 yds 300 Rum, 2237 fps, 2334 ftlbs KE, 67 lbft mom, 22" drift/10 mph wind
700 yds 338 WM, 1943 fps, 1845 ftlbs KE, 62 lbft mom, 29" drift/10 mph wind

The 338 does have a larger frontal area, but the 30 cal is plenty big enough to do more than adequate damage and the 300 RUM beats the 338 WM hands down on the charts.

I hope your head isn't hurting :rolleyes::D

yeah, and a 338/408 beats the 300 rum hands down on the charts. what's your point?

I am going to stick with the 338 Win mag. I don't want to hack up this gun to make those long cartridges fit. The gun actually has a lot of sentimental value which is why I have hesitated to rebarrel for so long.

I don't think I will ever take a 1000 yard shot at an elk. I don't have the money to buy the optics even if the gun and myself could make the shot. :D

The 338 Winny should work just fine and sounds like a good choice for your needs. It should knock the elk down real well at 700 yds and more. Just trying to make life difficult for ya. Have fun with your project and keep us posted. :D

I am already very indecisive, started this post looking for a 300 WSM, now I am rebarreling to a 338 WM.
