Let’s see your coyote rifle!

Was an Areo Precision M4E1 enhanced upper/lower in 224 Grendel... Its now in a Seekins upper/lower now. The thing is a coyote slayer. Have taken quite a few dogs past 500 and the longest past 750 yards

Everyone always want to shoot the 500 and I would let them with pretty stout loads, until some one could not hold on to it when they fired it and it fell on the ground and broke the front day glo sight, well they said they were sorry but did not want to pay the $100 to replace it. So now I load it with 250gr bullets and trailboss and they never know the difference, and just go back to my loads when I shoot.

You are just a little smarter than me. I never thought about someone dropping the thing, or, as my lawyer wife reminded me not too long ago, the liability if someone got hurt. I may not be doing much of that anymore. And the cost is pretty hard on me, too.

I have what you would call a guest rifle that I have for when I have people with no experience come over and visit from out of town who want to shoot. It is a Savage 223 bolt action I tell them it's a 30-06 and they go home telling anyone who will listen that's what they shot. Does that make me a bad person. LOL

Last few years I prefer my AR for quick follow up and running shots without having to lose the sight picture. For up close shots I have a Burris fast fire III at a 45* angle. Don't typically keep the 30 round mag in for calling though.

My bolt is a 6CR shooting 87 gr Berger at 3,378fps and 3200fps with a 105 Berger VLD.

Not as bad of a person as I am when I let someone shoot my 378 Weatherby with the brake on, and then take the brake off and hand it back to them and tell them that there isn't that much difference. I stand close so the little ones don't drop my rifle. Everyone always laughs--at first.

Here is my original coyote rifle it was handed down to me from several generations it's a 30-30 Marlin. I remember my great grandfather he was a Blacksmith and when he came back from the war he had cases of 303 British ammo. I would spend hours with him in his shop, anyways He use to disassemble they ammo and pour the powder into a bowl and the bullets into a tin can, and then scoop the powder with a 30-30 case and level even with the top and then load the bullet that he had ground the tip off. In case you are wondering 303 British ammo is .312 that rifle fed him and his family for many years That's how worn out it is it must have 5000 shots that went though it that's probably why he could get away with it. I remember him having a good day of hunting and getting two deers keeping one for himself and then calling on the "party telephone line" and telling one of the less fortunate families in they area he was talking to where in the woods to go pick up there bounty.

PS:I love that rifle when I use to cycle it when I was a kid it always made me feel like I was the Rifleman.

Here is Coyote rifle that I have never used and probably never will. it has a 26" heavy barrel and when I say heavy it was the biggest Dia I could fit in an AR platform, and then some grinding machining and fitting had to be done. to say it is nose heavy would be an understatement, to make it practical I would have to cut 10 inches off and I don't have the heart to do it with the price I am into it for, it sounded like a good idea at the time when I was building it. At least it makes for a good conversation piece. LOL

Ruger M77 MKII, .22-.250, Richards stock, McGowen D4, 7.7 twist, 75 Berger VLD, H4350, PPU brass. Leupold 4.5-14X40 SF LR. The yote was focused on lunch when I shot him in the back of the neck.

If I had a pickup this would be my truck gun.

Nitrogen cooled for volume rodent shooting? My guess? - are the nitrogen tubes are pre-filled via a tube from the removable tank and the gas allowed to slowly escape & expand. My 6mm AI with a 87 VMax would have probably blowed the yotes head off. Would Freon 410A work?

Always seeking guidance & direction from those having more wisdom and experience, I elected to observe the statement provided on page 347 of my 1st edition Berger manual in regard to use of the 75 grain .224 VLD bullet with the .22-.250 for shooting coyotes. I use H4350 & RL16 with that bullet and my Magneto speed chronograph tells me the velocities are 3250 out of a 26 long barrel. This combination has enabled me to successfully make all sorts of hits on a variety of targets some in excess of 600 yards.

I will be shooting a 6mm-06 with the 95 grain Berger VLD .243 bullet and hope to get more than 3300 fps from it. Scarcity of primers has reduced use of my 6mm AI with its requirement to fire form cases.

With the sad & depressing situation of the on-going shortage of components, my four .22-.250's using a variety of powders in the mid 30 grain charge weight range, like H4350, RL16, RS Hunter, H414, & StaBall will continue be my primary weapon to use against coyotes & long range rodents. The 75 grain Hornady ELDM bullet also performs well, costs less & expands better.

I have no plans to do any of my shooting with a mega magnum that uses 80 or more grains of powder to shoot some small animal weighing 35 pounds or less.

Newest build, haven't had a chance to take it out for yotes yet but I'm sure it'll do the job handily. Origin action, 22 inch 7 twist rock creek in 22 creedmoor, throated for 95s. In a grayboe terrain and badger bottom metal I got dirt cheap and topped with a 3-9 SWFA. Rattle can paint job on the barrel and stock. Load development shows promise with the 95s at 3200 fps.
