Int'l Sheep

Marky_Mark, I wanna go to Mongolia. That has always been on my bucket list. The draw back is my age and asthma. The Altai argali are magnificent.

My hunting buddy is looking seriously into Mongolia. If he goes then I may well go too. Looks to be a interesting place. Would love to afford the Argali sheep there, but doubt that is going to happen. The ibex and Gazelles are within reach so that's a possibility.

gillettehunter, if you get the opportunity to go to Mongolia I would go for it, within reason of course. Grand adventure that I would love.
Now, to all others I would NOT recommend going into to debt for these hunts. Yes, they are true adventure. But, weigh it all out in your mind if this is right for you. I have been fortunate to be able to hunt three continents, five countries, many states within the CONUS. I worked hard, saved my money, invested wisely and this made my hunt adventures possible. I am one that believes this life is a one way trip. Perhaps I am wrong. But, no one has returned from the here after to change my mind. So, each individual must make up his own mind.
I/we will be traveling to Maui to hunt Axis deer early July. I have committed to this being my last big over seas hunt. My wife of 52 years has been very supportive. She has accompanied me on most of my hunt adventures. But, now I want to commit my efforts into her wishes travel wise. I continue to apply for bighorn sheep hunts here in Montana. If I draw it would be great. So, to all I say dream big. Weigh what you desire and hope for the best. MTG

Yes, all of those argali are fantastic
From what ive heard the argali hunts arent the most physically demanding
The price of the hunts is just scary though
Mind you a stone sheep isnt far behind anymore

Yes, I can. Plus, if members on this forum do go to Mongolia I would be pleased if they shared their adventure with a story. That way I could vicariously hunt through them. Like reading a novel or reading another hunting adventure post. MTG

Back to the top on this…. I've found what I believe is a decent deal on an ibex hunt in Spain for the Sierra Nevada species or southeastern. This hunt includes a female ibex and a red deer stag as well.

Thinking it would be a good first international hunt to dip my toe in the water?

This would be in October of this year….

Thoughts? Advice?

I just got home from Spain. Took a Gredos opening morning, and then a Mouflon after 2 more days. I got lucky in that both animals were in the valley rather than top of the mountains. Mountain climbing at this age is getting old. I ate the backstraps while in Spain. Don't let anyone tell you they are not edible. If you don't take them, all the meat goes to the locals. The locals kept the 4 quarters, I was fine with that. I used the outfitters rifle, which made my life easier much easier. Toting around a rifle is a PITA in a rental car, if it gets stolen in Europe, you're looking at a Felony !! It was actually nice not worrying about the rifle & nice using a different rifle to hunt with. It seems all the Spain outfitters are good. They have a reputation to uphold at SCI & DSC.

About the animals, they don't smell you, they see you. They will see you across the valley, or draw.. 300 yrds they will pick you out on the hill side, and start moving away. 300 yards they knew we were there setting up, and they moved out before I could shoot. Had to back out until the next day.

Would I go back to Spain for Gredos #2.. ?? Not so sure. I already saw Madrid, Barcelona, then western Spain. If I do Ibex again, it would be Turkey. I still have a lot of money to spend on int'l shipping, broker, taxidermist, etc. So I'm really done with Ibex.

Is crime that bad in Spain that I have to worry about someone stealing my rifle out of a rental car?

Is crime that bad in general in Spain?

I have a small fortune invested in two what I consider long range hunting rifles and I would hate to go on a hunt like this and not be able to use one.

I train with those rifles all summer.

Hey, I won an auction to Spain for Becite Ibex from SCI in AK. Then I added the Balorian (SP?) Bok to my hunt. Only place to hunt those are on the island of Mallorca off the eastern coast of Spain. My wife and I also added a cruise in the Mediterranean after the hunts. We had a great time. Because I did the cruise, I just used the two PH's Rifles. Both were Blaser's and both had Sworo V8's on them. It was a little weird using the straight pull back bolts. The Ibex hunt was pretty easy as far as the physical aspect. They were down in meadows feeding when we found them. Stalked them maybe a 1/4 mile mostly behind a stone fence. A 150 yd shot and that was it. I did a chukar hunt there too, over pointing dogs. I missed the first two birds and I could imagine the guide thinking this is gonna be a long day! After that I think I missed one shot and I got that bird with the second barrel. Fun day. I should have added a Roe deer as well. There were European hunters there and they shot some really nice ones. Told my wife that I guess we'll have to go back, she's good with that! The Bok hunt was a bit more work, we hiked up into the mountains for a couple hours, not going fast, but we did cover some ground. After I shot my Bok and we're hiking down the PH says that he has a tag for a cull female. Did I want to try for one? Of course I said yes, there was a government game warden with us too. I shot the female around 300yds. When we got up to her the gov guy was pretty happy, because she was a cross with a domestic goat and she only had one teat. They are trying very hard to keep the Bok's pure so they do a lot of culling. We did our trip in April and since we were gone for a month we missed all of breakup at home. There are a few big outdoor shows around the country and like someone else mentioned they are great places for info. Also SCI banquets, RMEF banquets and others have auction or raffle hunts for critters in other countries. I've been to New Zealand, Idaho and Spain on hunts from banquets. The only thing the PH's and hotel staff mentioned about crime was pick pockets in certain places We didn't have any issues at all But there were places we didn't go at night either. I say go for it, cause you aren't going to be able to take it when you leave the mortal world

Thanks for sharing! Nice work!

I see that I'd have to make a trip to the Spain Consulate (NYC in my case) prior to going to obtain the proper paperwork to take my rifle.

Is crime bad in Albuquerque ? Philly ??? It only takes once for something to ruin your entire trip & commit a felony in Spain. I experienced no problems at all. No problems in Madrid. But the word is, there are pickpockets there, and I'm sure there are. I heard Barcelona is bad. I experienced no problems there at all. But it only takes once & you're out a rifle and committed a serious crime.

When I travel the USA to hunt, my rifle is literally chained down to the back of my truck.

My contractor stole 2 bottles of whisky from my liquor cabinet.
My daughter had her truck window smashed for ear pods.
I heard Canada is particularly bad, and I met guys in camp that lost everything traveling through Canada at a dinner stop.
