Sheep Scouting

Congratulations on the tag! Hope your hunt goes great. I drew CO RMBS years ago the first year I was eligible and killed a nice ram. Started applying for goat at the same time. Over thirty years later and still haven't drawn a goat tag.

I'm treating the hunt as a once in a lifetime because I know these tags don't come often.

Been scouting on and off last few weeks and it took a few trips to get back on the rams. I seen them first weekend of September from a distance and seen nothing or ewes and lambs lately. Found 10 yesterday with 4 nice ones in the band. The bigger rams were feeling their oats and sparring most of the time I watched them too. Had 6 moose below me as well. It interesting you mention salt.

When I was on my sheep hunt, various groups seemed to like a certain rock area on the hill and seemed to be eating things in and around the rocks. It don't occur to me they could be licking salt or minerals from the spot they frequented. It's still possible there was a food source but it didn't appear to have any greenery from what we could see

Camped a few nights on the opposite side of the mountain mostly for glassing purposes and been hunting from home the rest of the time. Been seeing sheep almost everyday. Been in pretty close on some good rams just haven't had a good shot in a nice one yet. I wish I had just a little more confidence on sending an arrow at a 100yds but sticking with 60-70 as my effective range depending on wind and other conditions.
