How far do you drive to the range?

I live on Long Island and don't have it nearly as good as you guys. The local public range is an hour away, shots are limited to 200 yds, and it cost about $20 every time you sit down. A month before the whitetail season it's PACKED.
I am a member of a private club in PA that is set up for 300yd benchrest but its 170mi away. I joined another club in upstate NY that has a 400yd range and is a little closer at 140mi.
Getting to either club takes 3-4hrs and the same to get home again. Excluding the dead of winter, I shoot every week. Guess how many miles I've got on my Sequoia????

15 minutes and I can shoot however far I want with a super big hill as a backstop. It's all on private so I'm the only one out there which is nice.

I have 2 public ranges about 30 min away but I never go to those. I prefer the private range that I drive 65 min to and pay $100/yr for a family membership. I can shoot to 800yds any given time or 1900 if nobody else is on the range.

5 minutes to shoot 100 yards but an hour and 15 minutes to shoot as far as I want. Up in the hills around 3700 feet. The problem is its snowed in good right now.

25 miles to a private range, rifle range max is 600 yards, a 360 degree range max shot is 50 yards and five 25 yard pistol ranges. $300.00 a year membership. Most of the time I am the only one there.

I'm 10 minutes from a range where I can shoot out to 300 yards. I'm also lucky enough to work 2 days a week from home. This allows me to take a "lead lunch" mid-day and be to the range and back inside the space of an hour. It works out very well if I just have a couple groups I want to shoot or to function check something. It also saves me going on the weekends when it tends to be more crowded.

500yd range is a hour drive. 1000yd range is about 7 hours.

I do all load development here in the man cave and step out the back door to my 100yd range. My bench is 20yds from my back door.
My LR shooting is 5 miles from my house. Huge 1000 acre field with an old airstrip down the middle which measures over 1800yds. Tough wind sometimes but it's real world practice for me.

Can get to a couple 300 yard ranges in about 30 minutes. Also possible to do 600 to 1k at them on "certain" days.
Takes about 2 hours to get to a "non range" place where I can shoot to 1k for general practice. When I go to these places I like to make a camping trip out of it. Usually lots of fun.

Many places that will allow you to shoot ground hogs will let you site your rifles in also ! I am in PA and have gone to state land and used powerlines to shoot out, it is not allowed however on game lands.

The 2019 match schedule is being prepared so check back later on for matches and dates, but if you are in the area of Council Bluffs, IA on 'any given Sunday' come on out and shoot the match. If you don't have the required equipment to shoot the match, well normally one of us will allow you to use ours, that is the type of people in 'our' club.

IIRC PA rules prohibit that type of field shooting. Shooting firearms afield (other than hunting) require you to be within X number of feet of the dwelling or building and you must have a suitable backstop within X number of yards behind the target.

The latter has no RSO on the 200 - 400 range which I've grown accustomed to enjoy. Common sense goes a long way

I think if you reread that only applies to IN HUNTING SEASON FOR BIG GAME, AND NEVER ON GAME LANDS ! This is straight out of our Game Commission's regulations book ! During the OPEN SEASONS FOR DEER AND BEARs, it is unlawful to shoot at any target other than legal game. Target shooting is lawful only when done : 1) on property owned by the shooter or by a guest of the property owner; 2) within 200 yards of a camp or headquarters where the shooter is either quartered or an invited guest; 3) at an established shooting range. The target must be protected by a natural or artificial barrier so that the BULLET or ARROW can not travel more than 15 yards beyond it . I have also known guys that while illegal have shot at rocks, ECT. during big game season just to check their windage or just wanting something to shoot at something ! Before becoming a warden I asked some weather they were afraid of getting caught shooting at random and they just smiled and asked, didn't you see that coyote ?
