Hornady ELD-X Official Thread

I finally got a chance to do some load development with the 143's in my 260 AI. 30" 1 in 8 twist 4 groove Krieger barrel. These are the first groups with these bullets through my gun, they are loaded .010" off. Using H4831sc I shot the 5 shot groups first in .3 grain increments from 47.6 to 48.8 grains, then narrowed my loads down to .2 grain increments from 48.2 to 49 grains shooting 3 shot groups. Used sorted Remington fireformed .243 brass because I had 300 of them laying around.

At 49 grains, I had no heavy bolt lift, no extractor mark, and excellent accuracy, as you can see. Didn't have my chronograph with me, but I'll chrono them on my next days off, I think I'm gonna do my next loads at 48.6, 48.8, 49, and possibly 49.2 grains with 5 shot groups and see if I can get this narrowed down more.

Has anyone developed a good load for the 220gr Eld-x in a 300win mag? I can't find the 212gr bullets anywhere so I'm trying the 220gr. I was thinking Retumbo because I have 29" of barrel to let this slow powder burn to its full potential... However I can't find any info for Retumbo in the 220gf 300win.

I would use load data for the 220 gr SMK. I would start around 75 grs and work up.

Impressive considering I'll be handloading my first ever loads this weekend. I'm amazed the difference between just 2gr of powder to tighten, open up and tighten again.

I know, I was really surprised, and I know I was steady and had good trigger pulls on all those groups, that's why I'm doing some duplicate loads with more rounds, to confirm. I'm surprised I'm at 49 grains and no pressure signs, 48.5 seems to be the max for most people I have seen. But 48 is the max in the Hogdens annual manual for a standard .260 w/142 smk....so I don't know.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their input and knowledge they are sharing about the Hornady ELD-X bullets. I am really happy this thread has turned out so well and I hope it continues to grow with more information and general discussion about these projectiles. Thanks again everybody, have a good day. gun)

Only thing I'm bummed about these bullets is Hornady said it's another 4-weeks for the 175 ELD-X to ship! getting antsy!!!

I hear ya.... I want to try the 175 eld-x in my 8" twist 7stw before I finalize the load. I've already put my scope shims in for one load, but those can be changed if need be. She doesn't really love the 195 berger, so this may be a very good option...

I have them on backorder every place I can and one of those retailers sent me an email that said expected ship date is June 6. I don't get my new Proof Research 7mm till sometime in April but I'd still like to have these bullets here waiting. I'm really counting on this new 7mm to replace my 300 win mag for elk. At least on paper the ELD-X grain for grain deliver way more KE down range than the Barnes 180gr TTSX I've been shooting.

To be clear, have they not made them yet ever or have they just sold out of first run?

Thanks!

Robert

It was two days ago that I talked to Hornady about the avail. of the bullets, the lady told me shippment shows 4-6 weeks! I have seen the 162 ELD-MAtCH on the shelves here in Billings but thats it! I too have a couple of boxes on order.

Robstar, she just said the ship date to me! All the stores I've talked to haven't even seen the 7mm ELD-X's!
