Help me with a new caliber on a build (hunting incorporated)

First off, I'm a newer reloader but have been reloading my 6.5-284 for a year now.

I built my 6.5-284 (tikka action) and a .300 win mag (savage action). I'm looking to do another one after the holidays

Should I go bigger? (338 lapua, 30-378 wby, 338 edge)

Or smaller? (220 swift, 17rem, 243 ai)

What action?


Talk me into one as well. Doesnt have to be one I listed. Need suggestions.

It will be for hunting. Whether it be coyotes or a d@mn grizzly.

Let me know your thoughts. Nothing is a wrong answer.

Also had thoughts about building an xp100 in a caliber. Still debating. If so I'll get ahold of Ernie.

I think you need a hot rod 30 or 338. Wildcat the 338 lap case. Build the rifle to be about 12 lbs with a 30" barrel.

Havent really looked much into the 300 prc. Do you have one?

Looks like you need a 223. No, it's not the latest/greatest thing out, but it is economical to load and a good all around varmint cartridge. Build it in a AR platform, bolt gun, xp-100, whatever tickles your fancy.

Looks like you have your bases covered for anything on this continent. That means you probably just want a new toy...in this case, a rifle. Perfect excuse to spend money, IMHO! Since you're spending, you might as well really spend...get that .338 Lapua and jump in with both feet. I have one and like it a lot, though I haven't had time to work up a load yet (spring...just need to get through winter and into the spring).

The only hole I see is on the upper end. Unless you're planning to shoot the grizzly at 1,000yds or further take a look at the 33 Nosler, 338-375Ruger, or just a straight .375Ruger. Though it doesn't get a lot of billing these days the .338 Rum is a very respectable round as well.

Personally the more I shoot the .375 Ruger the more I see it as a fantastic cartridge overall that I can to just about anything with out to 600yds.

I plan on building one sooner rather than later with a 28" barrel to see just how much further I can stretch it out.

So far I've taken two very large boars with the .375 Ruger and a lot of African game and it never ceases to amaze me when it comes to dropping them dead in their tracks every time as long as I do my part.

I killed one huge boar with it last year running straight way, quartering maybe 5 deg at most and hit him with a 270gr Peregrine VLR5 just below the anus and it still exited with about a golfball sized hole just off center from his chest. He weighed over 600lbs.

I thought for years about building one of the big 338's bur for my purposes it would be going backwards.

I have my 7mm STW's and 300 Rums if I want to shoot something at a thousand yards and the .375Ruger for the big monsters from PB to at least 600yds. With those considerations I just can't justify the expense or beating myself up with the .338's.

6.5-375Ruger would be a screamer for both.

I've reached out to 835yds on coyotes and pigs with my 6.5LRM so far and given the right circumstances would be quite comfortably stretching it considerably further.
