25 PRC with the new bullets out by Berger, it is a great round. carries 1500 ft lbs out to 800 yards. 3300 fps muzzle velocity and high bc bullets. Berger is suppling 133 vld, and 135 vld target... Would recommend a longer action and mag box . 1:8 twist of faster for barrel. little recoil and very accurate...Way better than the needmoor!!!

Someday, unless you shoot it out, that rifle will have to be sold unless you gift it to a relative, we all get old too fast. Based on that alone and your criteria for what you wanna do with it the 300 win mag is the obvious choice, when you're done with it you won't have a problem selling it, everybody and their uncle can shoot it, brass is readily available as it is loaded ammunition and I don't see that changing in the foreseeable future. While it may not be the hippest ,newest, coolest ,caliper /cartridge choice it still has an awful lot going for it

Ended up wanting to try out a Tikka action... So I went with the 30 Nosler. Now, I understand that I cannot seat the heavy bullets out further and get that performance gain, but that wasn't what I was thinking about for this. In the end it came down to available brass, action and stock available at great pricing (Thanks @North Idaho Hunter ).

I appreciate everyone's thoughts and input on this. I know that it seems like every one of these "WHICH CALIBER/CHAMBERING" threads is the same, but it felt nice knowing that the responses were directed at my situation rather than someones else's.

@jsmitt6 you could always go with a redsnake or mountain tactical AICS bottom metal conversion for your 30 nosler build.

This will get you to your COAL goals.

@grouse did this very build - he can comment more on the 30 nosler with the tikka platform.

For sure. I did see that conversion last night when researching. I am going to try out the factory magazine and if I find it wanting, will be ordering a RST Tikka AICS bottom metal. Thanks for the info.

It will work. Only down fall is you have to run ai mags. I like them but not everyone does for hunting purposes. I have some bottom metal and ai mags I may part with

If you end up deciding to part with them, shoot me a PM. I would probably take them off of your hands.

If it's a 30 you want, I happen to like the 300 Weatherby Mag. You can Hot Load it to handle heavy , tough Bullets at high velocities or dial it back to shoot like a 300 Win mag. All as you choose to do. Although Mine has the old 1979 mag na porting on it . I would get a real Muzz. break if I were tunning one today. The Accumark version uses the # 3 barrel S/S Fluted 26 inch which adds some weight and make it even more comfortable to shoot. This is an old target from 1991. 77.0 Grns of H 4831, (Pre SC I think.) My Weatherby Mark V has the wooden stock, and is bedded, and has the Magna port, on the 26 inch BBl. This is 180 Grn Sierra GK off a rest at 100 yards . Shoots ok for a Hunting Rifle . I think even at lower velocities of 2800 fps its Just fine for practice and fun at the range. Also nice for long range deer with a 150 or 165 wt Bullet. Increase the load or use a heavy partition bullet for Elk or Moose. Although I am a big .270 Win and. 270 Weath. Mag fan, its nice to have this big 30 in the safe. I think I have one more Elk Hunt left in me. Look at all the ballistic tables from 300 H and H to 300 RUM and this old war horse still stands the test of time. Something to consider!
