Help: every time I go to Kansas I get pulled over

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you did swear or anything like that. I wasn't there. I was just using that as an example. All I am saying is that an officer needs to know when and when not to act. It would keep them out of a lot of trouble. But it's hard sometimes because there are a lot of circumstances that can be involved.

I wasnt going to post on this because it just seems weird that it was started on a longrange hunting website AND posted in the deer hunting section. Maybe should be in the general discussion forum? This whole thread is weird to me. Everyone should know how the legal system works. It all comes down to if it is worth it for you to take legal action against the department. If it is, hire a lawyer and do something about it.

I have been in law enforcement for a while. I'm not saying that I believe you and I'm not saying that I don't believe you because it could happen. I don't know you and it is hard to decide on the Internet if someone is telling you the truth or not. Hell, I just told you that I was in law enforcement and I could be working at Taco Bell right now. The truth of the matter is that there are bad people in every job and it's those people that can make the whole company, department or agency look bad because it is a public service job. There are a ton of people that don't belong in law enforcement that doing the job. A lot of it has to do with the "alpha male" syndrome. As in, I am the winner ALWAYS! Now I will be the first to tell you that every officer needs to have that syndrome but i will also tell you that it only needs to be used when necessary. That is the tricky part about it because a lot of times you don't know when you will need it. That knowledge comes with officer experience. A good officer needs to be able to turn it on or off like a light switch. Officers that can't do that, will take too many things personally and retaliate back whether it be a word arguement or worse. If someone is talking trash to me, I let them do it. Their foul words mean nothing to me as long as I can get what I need to do finished. If they are cursing me up and down and they are good to go then it's explain why I stopped them and "have a nice day" from me. Now on the other hand, if I have something on that person and they are being uncooperative then I will do what I need to do to get the job done which means matching the resistance with the right amount of force to take care of the situation.

Officers shouldn't have to deal with people treating them badly but it is a job that is loved mostly when people really need you. That is just something that an officer has to accept and deal with it. If you can't do that and take it personal then you shouldn't be in this type of work. As public servants we took an oath to protect and serve. I didn't take an oath to protect and serve only those who don't belittle me or hate me. We as public servants should be above simple words or unwarranted anger.

If this actually happened to you then take it on legally if it means that much to you. If you get pulled over again (as you say for no reason), get the officers name off of his name plate and ask for his call sign. Call the department and report it.

Good on you sir, sounds like you are the kind of man we need on the job.

Being a good officer requires more patience than most can muster. That makes me appreciate all the more the officers who do it right. When you want to find out the kind of man someone is, give them a little power and you'll soon find out. It's a tough test for anyone. Good police officers are among the noblest men in the country, and bad ones are among the worst. With the sad state of affairs these days and our ever eroding rule of law we are in dire need of men who do it right.

You are also right this doesn't have much to do with deer hunting!

Good post that I agree with 100%!!!

Most of the drugs here come from California. Each time you are pulled over for BS,a complaint has to be filed against the individual who pulled you over. Profiling is a hard case to prove.

if you mean Kansas as "here", I have to ask, are you blaming me for your drug problems? Because I'm from California? Is that just cause?

All you seem to be saying is " we're gonna mess with you because you are from California, tough".

You need to stop being so defensive myfriend. He is saying they see your license plate, where your from, and give you some bull stuff excuse as to the stop. He is agreeing with you that you, and that you need to file complaints when it happens. At least that's what I read from it.

They're trying to find someone with a fairly large amount of cash to steal. Just be glad your mom doesn't live in Tennessee. All part of the fake War on Drugs. Police gotta get their shakedown cut too you know.

Jeff, I am afraid that this is what is really going on. While there are many good officers out there, there are quite a few states which are well known now for the police pulling over out of state vehicles and seizing cash, with really no basis except it is allowed now.

There have actually been lawsuits where the FBI and a police department were suing each other over "profit sharing" from seized cash, much of it had nothing to do with drug money or stolen property.

You might have seen in the news that Orange County is trying to change its local ordinances to allow cash seizures to occur as routine traffic stops, even with no evidence of a crime.

This is particularly bad, because as people loose faith in the banking system and do more cash based transactions, common people will be carrying more money. It gives the impression that the police force is no different than the highway robbers of the middle ages.

I know that police officers don't want to hear it, but trust is earned - not given. If a police officer seizes your hard earned money from you, it does not matter what law they are hiding behind - it feels like they have stolen your money for no good reason other than they can. To the average citizen, the difference between police seizure and organized criminal seizure of your money is very small.

If it makes you feel any better, I always try to rent a car as locally as possible. Two years ago I did a business trip from NJ to GA, and had the unfortunate luck of renting a car with a NY plate. I drove like a nun through NC and SC. Lots of people passing me, but no way was I going to go over the speed limit.

When I fly through the Northern States, I get TSA pre-check status. When I fly out of the south, I get the full "possible - terrorist" shake down. I am a business guy in a suite with white hair, but in a funny story, after one Southern Airport shake down, another passenger in a turban looked at me and said that he felt better about the bs he got hit with after seeing me with the screeners. :)

Not being defensive, sarcastic. I guess it doesn't work in posts.

You don't get it. Engine stopped, lights on in the vehicle, windows down before he gets there, hands on the wheel in plain sight, license, insurance and reg on the dash.

You present it like you think I did something. Did you forget to read the part about returning from a church function or are you a cop trying to make out like it's always the citizen.

This is not sarcasm. This is honest feedback. I am not a cop, and I am not a doctor. But I do think you may need ton see a therapist. Your deal goes more than skin deep.

You are probably reading to much into it but

Of course it goes more than skin deep. I said so. Cops are the only humans who have pointed guns at me.

You must have skipped a bunch of posts so I'll repeat.

Son of a cop.
Never seen the inside of a station or cop car except from the outise looking in.
Never been arrested.
Only traffic infractions and more than one was a speed trap.
Travel a great deal of the country by car for work and play.
Travel internationally by car.
Complete boy scout.
Almost a nondrinker.
My federal paperwork is always in order.
I get health certificates for my dog and falcons prior to traveling interstate per recommendations.

Only in Kansas do I get pulled over by local enforcement officers NOT by state highway officers.

The locals seem to be fishing or looking for a toll of some sort.

Honesty on the part of LEO that he is checking/profiling Calif plated vehicles would remove my anxiety but he can't do that because as we all know, that would be admitting to illegal search or detention.

I don't begrudge LEO fishing for contraband traffickers but it doesn't all come in neat packages with Calif plates. A thank you, have a good visit with mom would be nice instead of the stone faced disappoint look I get when they get nothing.

BTW: after posting here, emailing the KS governor and a few other public notices that it was happening, it stopped. Just coincidence I'm sure.
