Hammer bullet concern

I ran the 137HH in a 65SS with a 26" 7 twist barrel. I live at 6300 feet. I ran both H1000 and R23 and over 25% of the bullets tumbled with keyholes in the target at 100 yards. Everything says that they should have been stable but they were not. It's quite possible that's what is going on with the test in the video. Just one of those unexplained lack of stability situations.

I know that you are at high elevation and probably getting decent speed out of the rifle but it does say on the website that the bullet needs 6.5 twist or faster. I wont ever try to let my elevation and muzzle velocity make up for my lack of twist especially with a long mono. But I do agree with you that he is having the problem that you stated.

you'd be surprised to find out how many bullets actually tumble after entering a game animal, especially after losing some velocity 3 or 4 inches in. Last year I had a Barnes 168 TTSX from a 300 WSM tumble immediately after glancing off the near side of the spine. The 200 yd shot was almost vertical off a cliff to take down a wounded 6 X 6 bull that had already traveled 3/4 of a mile after a 338 hit. I found the bullet with almost zero expansion lodged in the bottom of the far side front shoulder with the base pointed away from the point of impact. I have discussed this with a well known rifle maker of custom rifles and he told me a good many bullets will tumble after the hit - but some tumble more readily than others depending on velocity, rate of twist and length and design of the bullet. He also said a well placed bullet generally trumps all the other factors.

Everything says that they should have been stable
Everything except what the manufacturer said So who's at fault here ?

No, he is correct. As much as I DO like Hammers, they have become the Sherman of bullets here. Every single bullet thread turns into a Hammer thread, it gets quite annoying at times.
🤣🤣 Probably a good bit of truth to that. And I accept that some responsibility probably lies with me. Just think how bad it'd be if we were paid to promote them. An absolute squabble circus. ;) I guess our excitement about Hammer experiences spills out a little too eager sometimes. 😬

I guess we should start posting hunting pictures of animals we take with Hammers, the organs, bullet travel and exit, and all details important to making the shot.
I trust what I've studied here at LRH. They will be on my next hunt. Pictures of the details will be included, should I knock down a muley this fall.
Being honest, let the chips fall where they may, with photo evidence.

right .... when was the last time the "absolute hammer load data " thread was not on the first page of the reloading section ... its been bumped to the top for 72 pages ... thats not promotion ??? why not just make a sticky

anything negative about hammer will be buried in 20 min , so deep nobody will read it anyways ... and thats , not promotion ???

i bet either one of 2 thing happens with this excessive promotion -- either this tread will be intentionally be overrun with all the happy users to dilute any negativity towards them or other threads will be replied to just to push it back a few pages

i am not upset one bit, like i said a little relieved to see a different side of the coin ..

i feel they are a premium bullet with some great reviews , that i would try ... sometime just feel that LRH reloading section , is a hammer ad --

you can not tell me with a straight face .. this forum ins't used to promote hammers

The site itself doesn't really promote hammers to any degree, the members do. It's not like Len or Steve is out here bumping threads for the advertising, the people using them are discussing and sharing their information and experiences. You know, the entire purpose of this forum.

Making it a sticky however would be the very promotion you dislike as every new person to enter the reloading section would see the Hammers pinned up top and automatically assume they are great since they were special enough to warrant a sticky without going into the weeds to find out what it is about them that works.

The Absolutes are a new design that show some unique properties and people are putting up their own money to test them then sharing their results here so that everyone can make an informed decision. That is why the thread is so long, Hammer is a two man shop that doesn't have the capacity to test the bullets across such a wide array of cartridges, barrel lengths and powder combinations so we, as the community using his product, are offering our experience to fill in the knowledge gap. I'm not quite sure why you seem to think that is a bad thing?

JMHO - I'd say that a bullet that tumbles after entering the animal was under-stabilized - regardless of how tightly it grouped on paper. And, such under-stabilization is the cause of many "unexplained" terminal ballistic failures.

I don't consider people independently and voluntarily reporting on their own personal use without receiving any payment or other form of compensation as "promotion." If a person simply saying he likes something is "promotion," then everyone engages in "promotion" all the time in the course of normal day-to-day conversation, and the word loses any sensible meaning.

I guess we have different definitions of the word "promotion."

I feel that if a bullet glances off of a solid bone, (like the spine in the example given) that tumbling would be normal. If a stick can cause a properly stabilized bullet to tumble through the air, why can't a bone do the same thing inside an animal?
