HAMMER 7MM 143 VS 177 FOR ELK

Has anyone had stability problems with the 177's in proof 1:8? If not i am going that direction as the bc is higher than the lighter counterparts.

Also. Any discounts offered for LRH members?
For the most part there has been very few stability problems with the 177's in an 8" twist. If you are hunting in cold temps at low elevation I would recommend going down to the 169g Hammer Hunter. @bigngreen has hunted very low temps with them but he is 5000' elev or higher.

@Stiltsville for what its worth @bigngreen has shot more elk with more kinds of bullets at short to long range than most of us combined. So let it go, its not worth the fight.

Rockymtnmt. Thanks so much for the help. Ill follow your lead and try the 169's.

Stiltsville, the only information you have shared on this specific topic is either bullet will do if properly placed. Not the info or help i am looking for. But thanks anyways.

If anyone has starting load info for H1000 or Retumbo and 169HH bullets please pm me.

Steve, any LRH discounts?

I don't have the loads on the top of my head so I don't want to give you poor information!! They are easy to tune, I've taken the 177 to a mile in an 8 twist but at 6000 ft plus, you can run them north of 3200 fps but I settled on a lower node in the 3170's and started Hammering elk.

Be willing to take a leap and say a 160grian Accubond would do far better than either of those crap hammers this topics about. After all 4OO is the new 50 .

How many elk have you taken with the nosler 28? out of curiosity. Not being disrespectful just asking

Fred you best drop that idea. All the "pro Hammer" experts know that no 160 gr bullet that is not a Hammer can kill an Elk @500 yards. It will just bounce off. Don't confuse them with the facts that 1000s of Elk have been killed with unbonded cup n core bullets. Based on Civil War records, I'd even opine that my hex bore .451 Whitworth could take down an Elk @500. Milk jugs die every shot !

Pretty simple at 400 yards any bullet that shoots well will do. Stressing over particulars is a novelist.

MOnO bullets suck.

We are stoning elk at 25O with black powder. A 28nosler is just starting it's stride at 400.
Pick what shoots best and practice a ton from sitting and kneeling it will get you much better results than wondering what magic bullet to use.

Look for stuff like this and enjoy your hunt.
