HAMMER 7MM 143 VS 177 FOR ELK

Very good info. This is the type of feedback i am looking for. Like you i am not super interested in running max velocity, i would like to preserve barrel life if at all possible.

Do you have experience with hammers @ close range high velocities? I would think they perform equally well.
Just like STX said, they are devastating at close range.
You'll see my mountain goat in my avatar. Took him at 208 yards with my 338 Lapua and the 213 gr Hammer Hunter at 3205 fps. Due to body position, I had to put it through his shoulder. It went through both shoulders and had a 1.5-2" exit wound. He jumped up and did a 180 upon impact, then fell over dead before I could rack another round. We used the gutless method, so I really didn't see what the internal organs looked like. But, all you could hear was sloshing every time we moved the carcass.
I shot a south Texas cull buck on a friends ranch with the 177 in my STW this year. About 150 yard shot. Dropped instantly. Lungs were jello.

Congrats on the goat! You do know that at 208 yds a .308 with cap n core would have easily done the job.

Yes, probably throwing a rock would work at that distance. I got lucky. My outfitter told me to bring the largest caliber I could shoot effectively. He said goats suck up lead and run off the sides of mountains when hit, so you want to poleaxe them. Plus, we were on Kodiak Island with lots of griz. The guides and outfitter all carried either a 338 or a 325 WSM......for a reason.
The point of the story was the bulletin performed wonderfully, went through both shoulders, had a nice size exit wound, destroyed the vitals, and pretty much poleaxed my goat. You don't have to shoot Hammers if you don't want to. That's not what this post is about. I've been thrilled with the accuracy and performance of their bullets. So much so, I've switched all my hunting rifles to them (8 cartridges). Just giving my experience. Take it for what it worth.

Nevrsummr your understanding of mono bullets, if anything is fun!
Trolling for someone to tell you it's ok to be stupid is far better than actual learning something. SARCASM. lol

Enjoy the 28 and post pictures of your kill.

It's simple the only way to get monos to keep from over pressure before they reach the velocity potential of like weight bullets of other makes they need to have Bering surface removed( relief cuts are bullet parachute ) which destroys BC. Then due to the low BC and the nature of a solid bullet not disrupting well they need a huge BC destroyer of a hollow point to get any tissue damage.

My brother killed this buck at 700 yards it was hit 6 times with barns bullets before a cup and core ankered it. My experience with monos is great at close range, but you did not build one of the fastest 284" on the market for 200 yard shots. The monos are for close work and a 28 ain't, so it's a poor choice one way or the other.

Nice bull dang nice. I'm at 13 points for Nevada and struck out again this year.

There is a lot that goes into a mono bullet that works, the Hammer is the only mono I've been happy with. I shoot a LOT of Berger's but a Hammer is the only bullet I will put on par with them for lethality, or even close.
I've ran Berger's to the range they barely open, so far I haven't found that with a Hammer so it's beyond 1000 on the 177 Hammer but these days we've had to take it back into the timber, the long range opportunities are not as abundant as they were.

Comparing a Barnes to a Hammer is not possible, they have the same in common as a Berger and Barnes.
