Experience with 358 STA

I am sure there are some Trail Boss loads that would be fine. Some of the light loads in large cartridges talk about putting Cream of Wheat in as a filler or cotton (cotton ball I guess). I have an old Lyman cast bullet manual so for a big case I looked at a .45-90 using 14g (18.2g max) of Unique behind a 400g plain base lead bullet. I do not have much experience with light loads. Be SURE the bullet makes it out of the barrel before firing a second one!!! Lots of information on such on the WEB. I would think 10g of Unique behind a 158g lead bullet would be fine, but I have not done such in quite a while and have no notes on the subject: you are on your own. Unique is powerful, be certain that you do not double charge when loading light loads. I use a plastic rod to check that all the cases are filled to the same level.

Very interesting! I'll have to give those a try after I figure out the Cutting Edge loads.

Little late to this thread, just found it. I have a STA built on a M700, 24" Douglas barrel, Bansner Sheephunter stock, Talley rings, and Leupold VariX-III 2.5-8x36. Rattlecan textured stock paint with automotive clearcoat. Weighs about 7.5lbs with 3 rounds and sling. It's a beast on the bench for sure. Balances well and it'll shoot better than I can. I've tried a few other bullets but my go to is 225 partitions at around 3150fps. I started with 3 boxes Quality Cartridge rounds and used the brass to reload but switched to Superior Ammo brass. Other than rifles handed down from my Grandfather and my Dad, this is my only one. Good for groundhogs to grizzly bears.

Necro-bump for a good thread…

A big "high five", for the .35…

Any updates from you guys with the bigger .358 Magnums?

Such as the 358 Norma Mag, 358 STA, 358/375 Ruger, or the 358 RUM?

Any loads with 225 Grain bullets? Velocities? Work good on deer to elk sized game?

My 26" 358 WSM will get a 225grn bullet up to about 2900 fps, accurately.

Thanks

I've worked up and beat myself up with a friend's good idea on paper 358 sta. We did initial workup coming up on 20 years ago before some of the modern go too powders were out. Think it was imr 4350 for the 225 accubond and 4831 for the 250. Think we got around 3100 from the 225 and 2800 from the 250. Think that was a consequence of the 225 load accuracy being at the top and the 250 accuracy load being at the starting load.

I've only been there for one of the animals it hammered, but hammered was the right word for the job. Think it's total is two elk and three mule deer. It doesn't get out much as it puts the hurt out both ends.

Not sure 20+ years later I'd do a belted 8mm base cartridge, and certainly would not do one in an ultralight mountain rifle....

What was the barrel length on the 3100 fps load?
Thanks

A four old thread resurrected! I had an STA. My accurate load was also 250's at 2800. Only shot 1 elk with it and she only made it a couple steps. It's a pretty powerful round.
Barrel length?
The reading I'm asking, I'd that I'm getting decent velocity with the short action 358 WSM.
And it doesn't seem like the big mag 358 loads I'm seeing are more than 200 fps higher than mine…
I'm guessing either I'm pushing it…or "they" are not pushing it… with their Big 358 mags.

Oh boy that's in a memory folder with some dust on it.... 24 I think.

The 250 load was not pushing it, think it was the base level starting load. Do remember the 225 like the high node and the 250 preferred the lower and it magnified the gap. I'll have the rifle later this spring, as the fellow who built it had decided it need to go to a younger generation that needs it's retina detached. Might be interesting to see what new pixie powders can do.
