Must be pretty good all around if our rich Uncle uses them. Sam that is.308 or 30-06
You aint joking it would make a great squirrel gun if you dont mind loosing a tree or two when you shoot them off the trunkWell I've been thinking a 50 BMG would be a good option. Anti material on down to small game, it will get it done. Reloading components are still available today, factory ammo, an exciting plinker. Self defense applications and good barrel life too, what's not to love? Just food for thought.
Good point, dinner and firewood. Another one for the Pro column! You aint joking it would make a great squirrel gun if you dont mind loosing a tree or two when you shoot them off the trunk
You are just too practical! A 50 BMG would take all the guesswork out of the sport. No more wondering if the rodent is too big for the bullet. The wind, the yardage--all negligible. How much fun could that be for a preteen kid?Well I've been thinking a 50 BMG would be a good option. Anti material on down to small game, it will get it done. I agree. I read the OPs initial question and his reply to ranges to be used at.Wow already at 25_pages. Not going to read them all.
It's a fun question to ponder. Most of us don't have this problem. If I were to build a rifle for this it would be a non-magnum long action in .270Win, 280AI, or 30-06. Realistically, I would build identical rifles or a switch barrel in two calibers suited for each application. Train on one, confirm with the other and go hunting. If you had to choose one rifle to hunt everything from antelope to elk, what would it be? This rifle must use components that are readily available. It must also be a caliber that is inherently accurate. No need to waste 600 rounds of 1000 round barrel life doing load development. I want to build a rifle but can't decide what to build.
Once again, been shooting elk across the canyon for a loooong time.i pushing 40 years with 338,now Norma then WeatherbyBee
Ya got me! 30-06 may be a good do-all cartridge under 400 yards but it is hardly ideal for long range. Pretty tough to come up with a 1000 yard rifle that is lightweight and also great for tree squirrels. But if ya come up with one--I am interested.Do any of you guys even long range ?
This turned out into one of those Facebook group full of gundummy responses, lmao
