Building A Do All Factory Ammo Rifle

300 Winchester magnum is my choice. I've taken it to Africa and shot many animals including crocs. Accuracy is the the key and it's there even with borrowed ammo. I needed more and the Hornady ammo was there and didn't need to resite my rifle. Used it here for elk and audad.

300 wm hard to beat as a do all rifle cartridge. As for the rifle, take hard look at the Kimber or Nosler 48, there are many others available. What ever you decide I would ask them to shoot it and then buy 500 rounds of the same lot# ammo. If you decide later you want someone to load for Hendershot can do this and offer you just about any bullet / weight combo you might want.
I have a McMillan 300, shoots just about anything you put in it, from 130 to 200 grainers. The 130's up to 155's are almost pleasant to shoot.

After shooting a Remington 700 BDL 7mm mag for over 30 years, I built a lighter 7mm mag with a carbon fiber AG Composites stock, a 24" Bartlein gain twist ( 1:9.1" to 1:8.7" ), Defiance Ruckus action, Hawkins Precision BDL bottom metal and a Trigger Tech Special trigger. This rifle handles like a dream and shoots great.

For me there is no such thing as a do all rifle. But the 3 most common hunting rounds I seem to find every where I have witnessed is 223 Remington, 308 Winchester and 300 Winchester magnum. Your choice of calibre will depend on the game you intend to hunt. For me it would be a match barreled and chambered action in 308 Winchester. I would also have a barrel tuner fitted.

I'm sure that my response on bullet type will get some people bent out of shape. The largest game I've shot and killed was a whitetail and that was with a fmj. FMJ is my hunting go too bullet. Larger and dangerous animals might change my mind?

I have plans to build a new 7saum ultralight mountain rifle, but recently had a thought, what about building an all around do all hunting rifle that I can shoot readily avalible factory hunting ammo from. (I know readily available is a stretch now). I was thinking something like 7mag or 300 win mag. Something that you could find ammo for locally from Africa to Canada. I travel and hunt quite a bit and plan on continuing to do so, and don't get me wrong I Love my 28 nosler, and I like to reload, but having something that I can just buy ammo and shoot would be nice too. Let me know if you guys have done something like this or have any suggestions.

30-06..... You can shoot from 100 gr. to 220 gr. and buy ammo absolutely anywhere in the world. Second would be 7mm Rem Mag, shoots further but smaller bullets; also available just about everywhere. Neither really big enough to satisfy most African PA's. Or you could go much bigger and still hunt Mulies with smaller projectiles (but harder to find in the states) and that is the .375 H&H.
All in all I'd go 30-06.

I just went through this same scenario myself. Wanted a one gun for all, never ends up being the case but why not. I ended up with a Savage 110 Storm in 6.5-284. Ammo is widely available as much as one wouldn't think. I'd have zero issue with taking this rifle anywhere even though there is always bigger/ better. It's hard to beat an adjustable aluminum pillar bedded stock, stainless barrel that weighs 8lbs with scope and has almost no kick. I'd feel more comfortable with taking this rifle anywhere compared to my 300wsm or 7RM just based on how easy it is to shoot and still be able to go a long long ways out effectively. Just my 2 cents, best of luck on your choice!!

Have used my 7 rem mag for 25 or so years antelope to elk and some small stuff also! Used 160 Nosler parton fed. Premium or same in hand loads for everything. Rifle is rem. 700 with barrel by shilen and Christianson carbon fiber.

SPINGFIELD 30-06, if there is ammo available it will be. The 06 will kill anything on this earth and with the bullets available today it is sensational. Recoil is light and energy fair, ammo is abundant compared to the fad calibers. You won't be able to find AI, Nosler or the newer 244's, most places but you will find 06 ammo and if you cannot just buy a Lee Loader and do it yourself, no press needed. Don't get caught up in the new fad calibers, some of these people are paper shredders and have more money than sense. I have 3 safes full of shooting irons and 90% are never shot. Happy shooting.

I was in the same boat as you on this for my next all round hunting rifle
Instead of building an all round custom rifle I went down an entirely different path
For the same money I bought a Sauer 404 in 300 Win Mag
It has its own built in universal factory tool in the front of its stock that allows you to break down the rifle where you can remove the barrel from the action to fit it into your pack
With that same tool you can adjust trigger pull and trigger angle
When the barrel is re-fitted into the action your return to zero is guaranteed
It also has its own quick detachable factory mounts once again guaranteed to return to zero
I have done all of this and I can honestly say all returns to zero were spot on and true
It also comes with open sights for hunting in thick brush
Tha barrel is hammer forged so there is no need to run in the barrel
Factory loads shoot just under 1 MOA
My hand loads with 210gn Berger VLD's will shoot 0.25MOA comfortably and take me out to 1000 yards shots
Couldn't ask for a better "off the shelf" rifle
